On This Day In Royal History . 11 June 1509 . King Henry VIII married Katharine of Aragon . . .The history ; . š Henry VII died on 21 April 1509, & the young Henry succeeded him as king Henry VIII. Soon after his fatherās burial on 10 May, Henry suddenly declared that he would marry Katharine, leaving unresolved issues concerning the papal dispensation & a missing part of the marriage portion. . š The new king maintained that it had been his fatherās dying wish that he marry Katharine. Whether or not this was true, it was certainly convenient. Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I had been attempting to marry his granddaughter (& Katharineās niece) Eleanor to Henry; she had now been jilted. . š Henryās wedding to Katharine was kept low-key & was held at the friarās church in Greenwich on 11 June 1509. The king was just days short of his 18th birthday, Katharine was 23 years of age. . š On 23 June 1509, Henry led Katharine from the Tower of London to Westminster Abbey for their coronation, which took place the following day. It was a grand affair: the kingās passage was lined with tapestries & laid with fine cloth. Following the ceremony, there was a grand banquet in Westminster Hall. As Katharine wrote to her father, āour time is spent in continuous festivalā. .
