Yo, what’s up music-loving people! Here’s a new playlist; let’s talk about a couple songs. First, Shalfi just dropped his EP this past Monday. I’ve been following Shalfi for a while now on social media, and his guitar-playing absolutely floors me. The fact that he JUST DROPPED HIS EP IS HIGH ALERT NEWS. Go check the full Shalfi EP, titled “The Redlands,” right now if you haven’t already! What a gifted musician, you’re all in for a treat. This Incubus song, “Echo” is seriously right up my alley. It reminds me of TTNG’s “Forever and Always” (which is featured in playlist 24), which is from the bands first demo released way back in 2003. It’s beautiful, soothing, pleasing, enticing, and just draws me in. Overall, it’s a very pretty song, and I love the atmosphere and aesthetic. I realize this is the first time I’ve put a Via Luna song on a playlist, but this is a band I’ve truly enjoyed listening to for a good while now. Their music is absolutely incredible. You know how some bands or artists just seem to resonate on a different level with you? For me, Via Luna is one of those bands. I’ve listened intently and with much focus and decisiveness that their music just jives completely in my brains my heart, my body. Week 26, the playlists keep churning out! A fun week of live music last week, working shows and seeing tons of cool bands perform live last week! I even got to see Slaughter Beach, Dog, a band I was super excited to see! This week’s featured song is “The Bridge” by Meadow Mountain, their newest single, which is the first song they’ve recorded together since my dear friend, Sam Armstrong-Zickefoose (@banjosamjo), joined them as their banjo player! I have been waiting for some new recordings from Meadow Mountain, and I’m excited things are in the works! The track is killer, as are all of Meadow Mountain’s music, but give it a listen! Welcome to the 25th The Week With Saqeef playlist! I listened a lot of cool music this week, some old favorites, some new tunes that really pulled my interest, but there is one very special song that I would like to talk about. The big featured track of this playlist is Green Rocky Road, an old folk song, and this song really holds a special place in my heart. I have been thinking a lot these last few days about a dear friend that unexpectedly passed some years ago. Her name was Rachel Cox, and she was one of the kindest, most genuine, and warm people I’d ever met. Rachel was a Resident Assistant and two years above me when I started college, and she was one of the most helpful, compassionate, and welcoming people at the college. I affectionately started calling her Mama Rachel because of the way she always made me feel and welcomed and loved and how she took care of everyone. She was an immensely talented individual and wonderful musician, and to hear her play guitar and fiddle and sing in the most wonderful and gentle soprano voice was one of the greatest spectacles of life. I remember Rachel singing Green Rocky Road, and there is even a recording on YouTube of her performing the song, dated 7-27-2014. I miss Rachel and the way she made everyone feel like they were relevant and welcome, and I always remember the way she sang this song. I hope you all will give her version, searchable on YouTube, a listen, as it’s one of the most beautiful things ever. Music is a vast, complex, endlessly growing part of our lives. Being interested in so many types of music can make keeping track of it all confusing. I have been listening to a lot of different and new artists lately, and it’s sometimes challenging knowing what to put into these playlists! But here we are again, another week coming by, and another 10 songs to share. Here we are with Week 22, an odd assorted collection of songs that seemed to tickle my fancy this past week. However, I think previous trends indicate this is pretty normal for me. Not just one type of music seems to suit my tastes, especially as of recently, but I’d venture to say that is the reality of most people. Playlist this week: Week 21, here we are. My listening habits have been all over the place as of late, which I kind of actually appreciate in making these playlists. It’s kind of fun to have dramatic changes in what you’re listening to. Each style of music can invoke such a diverse range of emotions and feelings, and maybe that’s truly telling of how we function as human beings; we are an amalgam of our surroundings, our tastes, our unique likes and dislikes. Recently heard this Anderson .Paak, Without You, that samples the Hiatus Kaiyote song Molasses, which is an absolute BANGER (and although it’s not on here, you should check it out regardless). Speaking of Hiatus Kaiyote, did you know they’ve been working on a new album? They recently played Fuji Rock fest, and have a few pre-album release shows planned in the coming months. The Dear Hunter recently announced Fossio Et Satio, their Fall 2019 Tour, which is exciting! I’ve been listening to them again recently, and this tour happened to pop up; look it up and check it out! Floral is currently wrapping up a UK tour with Invalids before playing ArcTanGent. Just some fun little music factoids about these artists for ya! It’s a step up production-wise from their last EP, and I have very much been looking forward to hearing these songs recorded after hearing them live at their last few shows.
