The re-archiving game of sketchbook stuff from the very start of my work right through is also adding in finished work or developmental work from outside sketchbook. (This was not previously shown on my other account). The photography was always cheap and pre-digital so the record is fragmented at best and less clear than the photos of sketchbooks of the period which had been photographed more recently. These first three are of a large scale (about 8 foot tall oil painting straight into the board of my space. ( I didnāt realise what s luxury that was until I taught the course myself and found that the boards were an expensive resource). This was an illustration piece in response to the Wasp Factory by Ian Banks and we were advised by Geoff to start off by looking at Calum Colvin. He would take real objects from the story and build them into the surface he was painting over so from certain angles they would be more visible. The kite, flowers and clock were elements of the story and were eventually painted over, leaving only their shapes. It wasnāt a well observed painting but it changed my approach a lot and gave me more confidence than Iād previously had while working on a small scale. I remember the lovely, neat and pristine guy working in the same space who worked in inks on stretched paper on his drawing board. Stupidly and selfishly I had worked late on this one night and had left a cup of paint- soaked blue turps on his space which ended up spilling and ruining his work. I must have been a nightmare to work alongside. Any photos of this I may have been organised enough to take as a finished outcome are long since gone into the void where all conditioned phenomena go. The final two images are more from the Sebastian photo shoot during which time I needed to eat more pies. Both the ideas around questioning masculinity in the book and the images of the Saint became part of my early narrative during that first year of coming out. #foundationart #illustration #calumcolvin #thewaspfactory #paint #nightmareneighbours #earlywork (at Liverpool) https://www.instagram.com/p/CS9ht1IMOAt/?utm_medium=tumblr
