George is getting older and having a harder time getting around with his three legs and arthritis. He’s also been struggling extra with separation anxiety lately (luckily his mom works from home). Besides acupuncture and pain meds, warm soaks in the tub can also help his muscles relax. Heartworm negative! George was heartworm positive upon rescue in early 2015 in Taiwan and still gets checked every year via a blood sample. He’s now been heartworm-free for almost 8 years! Update on George: Over the weekend we watched George very carefully to look for more seizures and gave him lots of pain meds and rest. After constant observation it was our guess that it was not in fact, focal seizures, but involuntary twitching from nerve pain. Since he’s missing a leg, he puts a good deal of weight and pressure on his good hip and lower back just getting around. We took him back to the vet clinic on Monday and got X-rays taken of his hips and lower back. The radiologist said he has chronic severe arthritis in his "good" hip, and the doctor mentioned it must be very bad because the radiologist doesn't usually use words like severe. 😔 He also has spondylosis (degenerative condition of the spine) in L2 and L3 that is likely causing nerve impingement and the seizure like jerking we are seeing. He also has something on L7 but right now, the radiologist can't tell if it's the start of a tumor or what they call an "artifact" which is in fact nothing, but rather a superimposed image of another part of the bone that got in the way of the X-ray. The radiologist can't quite tell, so he is scheduled for a second X-ray in two weeks to see if it has grown. We're also getting him scheduled now for a neurology appointment at the end of the month in case it is a spinal tumor in which case they will do an MRI, and either chemo or radiation (or both). If it's nothing then we'll continue his pain meds (which have really started to help the last two days!), rest, acupuncture (which you can see he had today at home courtesy of super-vet @nstab6) and possibly hydrotherapy. He’ll also be getting a custom wheelchair made to help take the pressure off of his lower back and hip.
