THE UNDERDOG SYNDROME
One of the hardest things I've had to make peace with, is people believing or expecting me to fail at anything I try. Kale I always struggled with it from as far back as I remember. I call it the UnderDog Syndrome. I figured it must be my reserved personality that was misunderstood as being somebody who wasn't driven or incapable. It's in the words people say and how they treated me. The shock on their faces whenever I did accomplish something used to offend me sometimes because it often confirmed my belief that they didn't believe I could do it. Now that I'm older, I've realised it isn't my job to figure out why people act the way they do.
Instead, I've decided to embrace being an UnderDog. It isn't easy though. It comes with alot of humility. It often means sitting back and letting people believe you're stupid. And that's tough right? Literally letting people believe you're daft. I've had to bite my tongue many times and observe more. Which also meant fighting the desire to give my side of the story. Bloody difficult. God once told me that I don't need to prove anything. He told me wise people will hear you. So I learned to embrace stepping back and listen more. It's amazing how much you can learn by listening!
Now, the shock on people's faces gives me an actual rush. I absolutely love it. I embrace being an UnderDog. I use that perception of me to fuel my drive to succeed. As long as I can do my part and work hard, stay focused, stay low-key and be humble, I trust that God got me. And lemme tell you, He has never let me down. ๐ป
