Between all the screaming and thrashing, Mazinger Z is a very soft story about the unbreakable bond between a kid and his toy robot. It's really sweet how all of Koji's hotheaded arogance is not egotism but stems from his sentimental unyielding faith to the only thing his grandpa left him.He won't pull through cause he's great but cause he has Mazinger.

Mecha fans should really watch those 70s super robot shows because they contain some impressive feats of creativity. While you can't avoid their repetitive nature on a narrative level, by virtue of being made before the standardization of the genre's visual cues, they exhibit a broad range of imaginative sequences that dissipated from mecha with the departure of those early animator who were building the genre from scratch. Specifically you find in them that raw, visceral animosity in the ways these robots moved that has been approximated very few times since.
The Big O is a great homage to Imagawa's Giant Robo less because of the aesthetic pastiche and more because it went on step further thematically. While Giant Robo deals with distorted and incomplete narratives, conceal and misinterpretation of historical facts, Big O was asking questions like "Is history uuuhhhh...a thing?".
