LYDIA PUFFED OUT HER CHEEKS. two round pumpkins sat in front of them on her dining room table. she was more of a spooky all year round kind of girl, but there were a couple of things to break out during the season. "the colonel or whatever he had you call him - did he do stuff like this with you? i thought you'd have fun with it" she had gone through the trouble of cutting holes in the tops of pumpkins before taking her's off. lydia reached in and pulled out the pumpkin's guts handful by handful. there was a bowl between them to put the innards. she liked the way it squished between her fingers. "i don't know what i'm going to carve this year, last year i tried to do a self portrait. it went terrible. i looked like one of those fucked up picasso paintings."

Between his forty-five years in an apocalyptic wasteland with a steady diet of crunchy cockroaches and expired dog food, and his full-time job as an assassin with more corrections under his belt than square meals in his stomach, Five has never been much of a cook. Sure, he can make the basics, obviously — scrambled eggs, grilled cheese, chicken noodle soup, spaghetti so long as the sauce comes out of a jar and the noodles come out of a box — but he's never really bothered to learn anything more complex than that.
It's kind of nice, though — the rhythmic and repetitive motions of slicing the tomatoes and onions, the dull thud of the sharp knife against the cutting-board, the spicy-sweet smell of the sauce as it simmers comfortably on the stovetop, and the feeling of the heavy ladle in his hands as he stirs it around in its pot, the careful precision of the whole process, and the way every step demands his full attention, the way every step keeps him firmly grounded in his body and in the moment so he can't get lost in his head, the way he can look at his bloodstained hands that have never done anything but destroy and realize, with something very close to wonder, that he's creating for what might be the first time in his whole life.
Even the vague background noise of Klaus — fluttering around the kitchen like a large and rather overexcited bird, humming and laughing and chattering on about a million and one things Five couldn't possibly hope to keep up with — is calming, in a way, the tension easing out of Five's ever-taut shoulders the longer he listens to his brother's aimless, irrelevant rambling.
"Is this the way the sauce is supposed to look?" he asks, breaking his silence for the first time in nearly an hour — say what you will about Klaus, but at least he knows how to carry a conversation when the other person doesn't have much to contribute — and taking a step away from the stove so his brother can come and take a look. Klaus is the self-proclaimed huevos rancheros expert after all, not him. "It seems kind of chunky."

"Well, I'd prefer the term pragmatic," the Handler arches one of her perfectly manicured brows at the most annoying Hargreeves sibling she's ever personally encountered, but a smile plays at the edges of her mouth all the same. She never would have made it this far in the Commission if she hadn't learned how to hold her head high and wear the word bitch like a crown on her head, and now it's become more a mark of pride than shame: If they think she's heartless, then she's clearly doing her job right.
They can say whatever they like about her, anyway. They're just scrounging around for excuses, projecting their own mediocrity onto her. How pitiful.
She sits up a bit straighter in her seat, smoothing the skirt of her new black dress so it hangs tantalizingly just above her knees, the way the tailor insisted it would, and clasps her hands on the polished surface of her cherry-oak desk, red nail polish and silver rings gleaming against the dark wood. "Honestly... Klaus, isn't it? Yes, that's it. I really don't see why I ought to give you something for nothing here. That's just bad business sense. Surely, you can understand that." She laughs, then, at the expression on his face, tossing her head back and putting a hand to her chest. "Now, now, don't look at me like that! I'm certain we can work out a fair deal! The question is..." she sobers up again and fixes him with an unflinching stare. "What are you willing to give me in exchange?"

KLAUS HARGREEVES: WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITHOUT ME? 'crash and burn, baby. and probably have more snacks in the car without you eating all of them,' it's a teasing tone that touches finley's words, the man glancing in his rearview mirror. scanning the highway that stretches out behind them as he drives, before eyes move back to the road in front of him. 'seriously, we just stopped, and you already ate all the beef jerky. next time, just tell me you're hungry - we'll get some real food, man,' @theseancekid.

it was difficult for viktor to feel settled into his life. so many choices were stolen from the hargreeves children, and it was only in their home that viktor found control. while their siblings didn't visit often, there had always been a door ajar, just waiting to be pushed open. he had cleaned up the cobwebs and shooed out the dust, trying to manifest a new normal for himself.
viktor laughs, looking up at klaus,"i know this isn't the right way to do it." they confessed. over his gas oven he held a marshmallow skewered on a butter knife that was heating over the flame. viktor turned the sweet over to make sure it was evenly browning. "you welcome to try, you might have better luck. i just kept thinking about how we've never had a s'more. or how i haven't at least. and i won't be caught camping but i thought this i could try."
