The lights are too bright. The room smells like sandalwood and pity. Ghost sits stiff in the armchair, not the couch. Never the couch.
Heâs still in boots. Jacket zipped high. Gloves tucked half-assed into a back pocket. Thereâs a streak of something dried and dark on his forearm. Might be blood. Probably is.
The therapist offers a soft smile. âHow are you today?â
He doesnât look at her. Eyes locked on the floor.
âIâm good,â he mutters. âHad a great weekend.â
Flat. Rehearsed. Like reading from a briefing sheet.
But tears still prick at the corners of his eyes.
Fuck. Not now, Simon.
Swallow it down. Breathe. Get through the hour.
She tilts her head, watching him like she sees right through the Kevlar. That pisses him off.
Then she stands. Walks to the door.
His body tenses, instinct ready to follow, but sheâs not leaving. She opens the door, peeks out into the hallway.
âNo oneâs out there,â she says gently. Closes the door. Click.
Then, the lights go off. The room softens into a dim golden haze beneath a single lamp.
âThere,â she sighs. âThatâs better.â
Ghost narrows his eyes. âWhat is this? Mood lighting? Cozy interrogation?â
She doesnât answer. Just sits â on the couch, not in her chair. Not too close.
He folds his arms tighter. A fortress in human form.
âThis where you lean in and say something warm to crack me open?â he mutters. âNot my first rodeo.â
She says nothing. Just waits. Calm. Like sheâs got all day.
He glares at the wall.
âI lost him,â he says finally, voice low, rough. âPrice.â
Still silence. Not the cold kind â the kind that makes space.
âIt went sideways. Intel was garbage. I shouldâve seen it. Shouldâve been faster. One second of hesitation andââ He shakes his head. âThatâs all it takes.â
His hand tightens on his knee. Fingernails digging in. Trying to stay grounded.
âIâm supposed to keep people alive. Thatâs the fookinâ job. He trusted me.â
A breath. Sharp. Bitter.
âAnd I left him behind in a body bag.â
He finally looks up. Eyes burning, red with rage and guilt, the kind that eats you alive from the inside out.
âYou think talking about it makes it hurt less?â he scoffs. âLike cryingâs gonna bring him back?â
âNo,â she says. âBut maybe carrying it alone is killing you, too.â
He opens his mouth. Shuts it. Breath hitching.
Ghost leans forward now. Elbows on his knees. Mask still on, always on, but something in his posture begins to unravel.
âYou know,â she says softly, âevery time you come in here, you sit like a coiled spring.â
He doesnât reply. Just stares at the floor. Thinking about the desert. About Priceâs voice right before the comms went dead.
She leans in slightly. Not threatening. Just present.
âSimon,â she says â and the name lands heavy in the room. She rarely uses it.
His head lifts, just a bit.
âYou talk like youâre a failure. Like itâs all your fault. Like losing him means you donât deserve peace.â
A pause.
âBut I donât think this is about blame. I think itâs about punishment.â
His jaw clenches. Breath held. She touched something raw.
âYou want to keep hurting,â she says. âBecause if you let it go, it feels like he didnât matter.â
Ghost exhales through his nose, sharp. âDonât twist this.â
âIâm not,â she says, steady. âBut you are.â
He stands. Pacing now. Energy erratic.
âI donât cry,â he snaps. âI donât sit here and⌠and fold like some broken toy.â
âNo,â she says. âYou sit here and lie.â
He freezes. Turns.
âExcuse me?â
âYou lie,â she repeats. âEvery time you say youâre âgood.â Every time you walk in here with blood under your nails and pretend itâs just another day. Youâre not a statue, Simon. Youâre a man. And youâre in pain.â
The silence after is deafening.
âIâm not weak.â
âNo one said you were,â she replies. âBut youâre human. Youâre grieving. And youâve built a fortress so tall, even you canât get inside.â
He doesnât move. Doesnât breathe.
She steps forward slowly. Controlled. Stops just short of touching distance.
âAnd maybe,â she adds, âwhat scares you most isnât the pain. Itâs that you donât know who you are without it.â
Thatâs the line.
The one that splinters him.
He backs up, slow. Shaking his head. But then he stops. Fists clenched. Voice like gravel.
âI canât keep carrying it. I thought I could. But I canât.â
She nods. No judgment.
âThen let it down. Just for a second. Just here.â
âI donât know how,â he says.
âYes, you do,â she answers. âYouâre doing it right now.â
He looks at her. Really looks. Eyes glassy. Haunted. Like a man who still hears gunfire in the quiet.
She gestures toward the couch.
âSit,â she says gently. âThe doorâs closed. The world isnât watching. You can stop pretending.â
His knees give a little. The weight finally lands.
He sinks down.
For a moment, heâs not a soldier. Not a ghost.
Just Simon.
And for the first time in a long timeâ
He lets himself cry.
She leans in, voice soft but steady.
âYou donât have to be strong here. I can handle it.â
The words hang in the air like smoke.
He tries to hold it in. To cage it behind ribs and bone.
But it cracks â not gentle. Not quiet.
Full-body sobs, years overdue. The kind you choke on.
He turns away, ashamed.
But she doesnât flinch. Doesnât speak. Just stays.
Still. Steady.
Sometimes it isnât about fixing anything.
Sometimes itâs just about knowing the door is closedâ
Helloo..? The knight, right? I came here because the king has decided that all of the royal court has to get therapy now.. So, how are you feeling? Anything bothering you these days?
Greetings.
Ah, His Highness's order was quite strange; I am not exactly certain I agree with its effectiveness, albeit I understand his motives.
I am doing all right. Indeed, everything is fine; there is always something happening in the kingdom (usually something related to the release of dangerous animals), so I could say I am sufficiently... Enriched.
There is nothing bothering me, not really, although I am a little concerned about this. I wonder if there were additional reasons as to why the King ordered therapy for all of us.
I thank you for your time, Ryu âif I may use that nameâ.
[His eye twitches, as he has to bite the inner side of his cheek to restrain himself from lashing out. It's just the normal stuff, right? He shouldn't be so alarmed by the question, considering where he is...]
Well, [he sighs.] I was born in New York, lived there, uh, pretty much my entire life. Up until that... well, it was on the news, I moved after that, of course. My parents were... not great, but I still could attend school just fine.
[He stares at the person at the desk intently. They're writing something down again... already?]
[They appear to quickly notice him going silent.]
Please, go on.
Right, [the man has to suppress the urge to snarl at them, and continues.] I enlisted in the army at twenty-six. Never went to college or anything of that sort, just... didn't have the money, nor really knew what I wanted to be. Before then worked here and there, wherever there was a vacancy open. Right now, I'm... unemployed.
[He sees them nod, then make a note again. And after that, with the same sickening smile, they ask.]
Would you mind telling me a little more about some parts?
Is that not enough? [The man responds with a cautious question. Of course it's not, but maybe he's just being paranoid. Maybe there is no harm in sharing... he's here for a reason.]
[After being met with a soft head shake, he groans.]
