Hello to anyone from St Joseph County, Indiana. I have a request.

I spent time in the area and I remember the kids section of the library being INCREDIBLY cool. The main library had a Travel theme with luggage outside and trains you could sit in and read inside the kids area. Another one that I went to more often had a full on fake forest with trees you could go into with books displayed outside, a fake brook that had stepping stones and a bridge you could use to cross, and I think paintings on the walls too. Like it just felt very cosy. So I was reminiscing to a friend about it who works for a library and it turns out... that is really unique. And they are doing some work on their kids area soon. If anyone has any other memories, photos, news articles, etc of the St Joseph Public Library starting around 2001 but up to maybe 2023, if you could either reblog this with them or message me with it, I would be INCREDIBLY grateful.

Concept development for "The Flaming Talon Tavern".

The Flaming Talon Tavern was the project I worked on for my Senior Capstone last semester! This is the majority of the visuals I created. I did everything from writing to research, concepts, illustrations, and graphic designs by myself within the span of the semester.

This fantasy restaurant is set inside the larger theme park land of the Kingdom of Alaveris (a concept I previously began to explore a while ago). The Flaming Talon Tavern was established by the renowned revolutionary leader, Ivory Ravenwood, to serve as a secretive sanctuary for magic users after all unregulated practice of magic is outlawed in the kingdom. Her son, Drake Burnsbriar, has since taken over the family business and currently serves as the tavern's charismatic host.

It's not every day I get to have this much freedom with a project, so I took advantage of that and had a lot of fun with it! Also, I'm really proud of how it turned out overall!

working in themed entertainment is all fun and games until your project opens and you see people saying completely wrong information about it and you just have to sit like this because you can’t correct them

One thing I’ve noticed about themed spaces like amusement parks, “immersive” walkthroughs, and museums is that the best ones are usually deeply artificial.

That robot character with all those exposed servos? They’re a lot more convincing if the servos are fiberglass shells painted to look like metal.

Those bushes? Carefully crafted plastic and plaster.

The giant barcode sticker on that giant toy prop? Hand-painted to be just the right balance of even and jagged, then sealed in place with resin to give it that sticker sheen. We’ve tried using actual stickers before, and guests pick at the edges or rip them off completely.

Authenticity creates more maintenance work and opens the themed space up to risk. Sterile falsehood that feels sufficiently real is ten times the cost up-front but sells the idea so much better and is safer. There’s a metaphor here but I really don’t want to think about it.

the fact i get to use my engineering degree literally just to make people happy is the greatest gift i could have asked for

#i think i’ve talked on here about the engineering student to defence contractor pipeline #so tldr it’s very real and they know they’re the only ones offering good salaries to infinite engineering grads in a barren job market #anyway it’s complicated and upsetting #so the fact that i get to go to work every day and use my skills exclusively to bring joy makes me kind of emotional :’)#themed entertainment

finals are still exploding me.. however. MY TEAM GOT BEST CONCEPT ART ON OUR DESIGN COMP!! here is my work for the kingdom of solarium.. a theme park land that will never exist. pan-asian magitech kingdom filled with cinder spirits. those little blue things scattered throughout the merch.

characters. baz and rune.. a wizard and a thief. brother and sister even. (baz wears heelies and rune is transfem. this is important to me.) the show scenes are hard to explain without the full dark ride, but they're the ones i was asked to illustrate.. so. here for archival purposes. logos on the buttons made by my teammate who doesn't have tumblr.

Favorite roller coaster?

AW FUUUUCK see ok. Conceptually my favorite roller coaster would likely be the smiler but i have never been to alton towers and likely won’t. the theming and concept and Dedication to the like… Lore is SO intriguing to me. OR in terms of theming and also concept but ignoring Ride Intensity i really REALLY love revenge of the mummy @ universal. the fake out ending is SUBLIME and actually caught me on my first ride. honorable mention for this section also goes to laff trakk @ hershey park i’m just a sucker for in-the-dark roller coasters w black light theming

in terms of actual RIDE EXPERIENCE i have to say the velocicoaster. the giant hill that u see on all of the merch for the ride is fucking INCREDIBLE in person. when they said it went 0-70 in like 3 seconds i thought that was the first launch and i was like :| oh ok that didn’t feel that intense . it is NOT the first launch it is the second launch at that hill and it’s fucking CRAZY!!!!! runners up in this section r hagrid’s motorbike adventure (FUCK harry potter. but from a technological standpoint and ride experience standpoint it was insane. i just wish it wasn’t themed to that shitass franchise) and ummmm. the phantom’s revenge simply for being the ride that got me Into enjoying roller coasters again
