This is a compilation of short extracts that I have had sat in my drafts for ages, they happen before and during the Hobbit timeline and may one day become a longer fic. Hope you enjoy â„
You adjust your hood knocking gently on the green door. I very bedraggled looking hobbit opens the door a wheel of cheese clutched in his arms "Yes?" you offer a warm smile "You must be Master Baggins, am I late?" Bilbo nods then shakes his head opening the door wider.
Balin is first to spot you offering a warm smile and a knowing look "I thought you were not coming?" You shrug scanning the room "What ever gave you that idea?" he chuckles clearing a space for you at the table "I believe he will have something to say about your decision." Fili and Kili both grin broadly but one look from you stops them from commentating.
Gandalf nods in your direction smiling knowingly. A loud knock echoes through the home the poor hobbit practically jump out of his skin. Balin smiles "He's hear." You settle against the wall crossing your arms across your chest while Bilbo goes to answer the door.
Thorin looks suitable bedraggled, Bofur gets him a plate of food and jug of ale while the others settle quietly around the table. Thorin sits at the table eating slowly while observing the room, his eyes skip over you before flitting back. You smile slightly raising your brows in challenge. He says nothing but you notice his jaw tighten and eyes flicker slightly as he continues surveying the room. Dwalin grins leaning in "You are not going to hear the end of this." "I know."
The map is revealed and Bilbo is handed his contract shortly after falling to the ground in shock. You help Gandalf carry him through to the other room and before going into the kitchen too fix a pot of tea.
"I told you to stay with Dis." You smile not turning around "Did you? I don't recall you saying that."
"Y/N this is dangerous."
"I seem to remember you complimenting my fighting skills and not wishing to be apart."
"That is not relevant and yes I hate leaving you but-"
"I am an excellent navigator, healer and can protect myself just fine." he goes quite at this. Finally you turn leaning back against the counter meeting his gaze "Did you really think I was going to let you do this alone?"
"I'm not alone." You roll your eyes stepping closer "You know full well what I mean Thorin Oakenshield." he huffs out a small laugh cupping your face gently "AmrĂąlimĂȘ. I can't lose you."
"I am not leaving."
he nods "I know."
"You should know by now my love your stuck with me." he chuckles brushing the hair from your face "Satthiye mushug KhĂźĂȘ." You lean your forehead against his smiling gently "I swore to always protect you and I mean to honour that."
"And I you." Gandalf clears his throat loudly the two of you stepping apart, Thorin returns to his normal blank expression while you pick up the a mug of sweet tea to give to the hobbit.
Bilbo glances over at where you are sat with Fili and Kili. Fili and Kili both have their heads in your lap both listening intently to you speak. Its the quietest he has ever seen the two brothers.
The entire company seems to know you well and treats you with a high respect. You are also the only one who stands up to Thorin when he is makes a stubborn decision and remarkably he listens. Bilbo watched in shock when just half an hour ago you had a heated discussion in Khuzdul. The other members of the company had not even flinched. Gandalf had even looked amused.
Thorin joins you and his nephews sitting next to you. You smile warmly exchanging a few quite words which make him smile. In the past few months Bilbo can count on one hand how many times he has seen Thorin smile all of them where when he was with you.
"Balin?" the dwarf looks up from where he is tending the fire with Bofur, Gloin and Dwalin. "Who is Y/N?" the four dwarfs exchange a confused glance "I am sorry Master Baggins I thought you were aware. Y/N is Thorins partner. Been together 60 years. Only one I've ever seen to calm his temper."
Gloin chuckles "Never seen a dwarf so smitten before." Dwalin snorts "You're one to talk. How's your wife?"
"Leave my wife out of it."
Balin chuckles turning back to Bilbo " The two were friends for years. Thorin changed after the dragon we all did. He disappeared shortly after, not sure on the details but Y/N bought him back. The two where freinds for a long while and you will never meet a couple more devoted to each other." the group glance over at your little huddle, Fili and Kili have moved away leaving you and Thorin conversing quietly.
It makes sense, your calm to his storm. Thorin has his head in your lap while you card your fingers through his hair braiding small pieces together. The other dwarfs are snickering as the usually stoic male melts under your touch. But the two of you either don't care of don't notice lost in your own little world.
You pull your worn cloak tighter, you've lost track of the days. How many towns you have trudged through but you finally have a lead. Apparently, the next mountain town over has a young dwarf working in the blacksmiths crafting swords. Your money has almost run out, you have been getting work where you can to keep you going. You've past through multiple towns containing scattered dwarves from the mountain.
Finally after two days the town comes into view, similar to the others you have already combed through. You haven't seen Thorin in years, not since the last battle against the orcs, but you know you have to find him. You know him, he will be beating himself up over something he had no control over. Punishing himself. Pulling up your hood you enter the town finding your way along the main street to what appears to be the quieter of the two taverns.
The innkeeper is friendly enough providing you a room where you spend a good hour scrubbing away the dirt and grime from travelling. Clean for the first time in days you slowly pick your way through the streets asking once for directions, the blacksmith is tucked against the mountain side a large open front heat rippling from inside.
You approach slowly your hood obscuring your face. There are two men inside the shop where the forge is blazing and stood outside wielding a hammer, sparks blazing every time he brings it down is Thorin. He is wearing a worn blue shirt the sleeves rolled up to his biceps, a grave expression on his face. You watch him for a short while as he examines the blade he is working on, a few grey hairs streak through the black. Not a surprise with all that has happened but he is still just as handsome if not more so. His beard is shorter than last you saw him but it suits him.
Your courage faulters when his movements stop. He pauses just a moment to wipe his brow before plunging the blade into a barrel of water steam curling up from the surface. Taking a deep breath you step forward "I am told this is the place to come for swords?" Thorin grunts in response "What kind?"
"I just need mine sharpening if that is possible?" he nods and you remove your sword belt handing it over. Thorin lays down the blade he is holding and takes your own slowly removing it from its scabbard. "This is a dwarven blade," he turns it over examining the hilt "Where did you get this?"
"It was a gift from an old friend." He brushes his thumb over the engravings just below the hilt "Y/N?" you push back your hood back smiling slightly "Hi Thorin." he remains frozen still clutching your sword "Is it really you?"
You smile heart hammering in your chest "So are you able to sharpen my sword?" he nods eyes locked on your own "How did you find me?"
"Took a while." he huffs handing you back your belt "This won't take long."
Thorin takes your sword to the back methodically sharpening the blade his heart pounding in his chest. Time has done nothing to dampen the feelings he has for you. In fact they seem to have returned stronger upon seeing you again.
Satisfied with his work he makes his way back towards you. You smile warmly causing his heart to flutter "Thank you. What do I owe?"
"Nothing. I'll cover it."
"Are you certain?" he nods you always managed to make him smile even at the gravest of times. "Thank you."
"Why did you come?" you sheath your sword "I had to see you. I heard stories of you after Moria. Thorin Oakenshield."
"You were there?" you nod "My uncle forbade me from joining the fight my shoulder was still recovering, so I served in the medic tents. All spoke of your bravery when you faced the white orc. I felt very proud to be your friend." Friend the word is like ice to him, if things had gone differently if there had been no dragon he would have courted you. Asked you to be his. His mind wanders back to the mountain; the day the dragon came...
You had always bought out the best in him. When the dragon attacked he remembers the chaos and disarray not knowing who was alive or dead. He had no choice but to put duty and family first leading his people to what is deemed a safe place. More keep arriving covered in debris and soot. But still many are missing, he catches site of your uncle but still no sign of you.
It was two days before he finally had a moment to himself. The flow of dwarves has slowed to a trickle then to a stop. Still so many unaccounted for. He can't bring himself to admit you didn't make it. Dis keeps trying to reassure him but even she knows its unlikely. He is sat with Dis when a cry goes out another group has made it out. Both are instantly on their feet to help the newcomers coated in dust and grime.
"We hid in the old passages. So much had collapsed but we managed. We make it out just in time, rock fall sealed it behind us. Norlu got his foot stuck had no choice." he motions to a younger dwarf leaning heavily onto someone elses shoulder the bottom part of his leg gone. A healer comes forward to take the injured dwarf and the one he was leaning on turns around. He doesn't remember moving. But next thing he is right in front of you pulling you into his arms breathing a deep sigh of relief.
He snaps back to reality where you are stood in front of him smiling softly. "After the battle I wanted to find you. But there were so many injured. By the time I had done what I could you were gone. All Balin could tell me was you were alive."
"I had to find my father." you smile softly "I know, you don't have to explain yourself to me. But I was wondering if you would like some company?" Thorin mirrors your smile, how you mange to always make him feel calm baffles him.
"Its a lot of time on the road? I only stop when I run out of money." You shrug slightly "That's not a no?" he huffs "I could never say no to you." You chuckle the sound sending warmth shooting straight through him. "In that case, need another pair of hands?"
You have been travelling just over a year now the tension between the two of constantly bubbling just beneath the surface. Stolen glances, heated stares, hastily looking away when the other catches you.
Finally you find the perfect excuse to breach the unspoken boundaries after a long trek through the woodlands "Thorin you have a twig in your hair." knowing the implications you slowly reach out untangling the stick gently brushing the tangled strands back into place "There." Thorin is frozen beneath your touch, smiling warmly and fighting your own rising blush you step back "Sorry."
" 'S okay." his voice is gruff, everyday the urge to admit his feelings grows stronger. Even in the mountain; you where the only one who would talk back not caring for you difference in status. He knew he was gruff at times with a temper but you were always there always offering guidance and when needed a challenge. You matched his stubbornness but also calmed his tempers always offering a grin and snarky retort. He had loved you for years only truly realising the depth of his feelings when he thought he had lost you too the dragon but was too stubborn to admit to them.
Until now, for months he has been stuck in a constant battle about his family, his duty to his people and kingdom but overall his duty to himself. You are the reason he keeps going, the reason he can wake up with a smile on his face. He cannot and does not want to imagine a world without you in it.
He watches as you build a small fire concentration written across your face "Y/N?" he clears his throat slightly fiddling with the bead hidden deep in his pocket "Would you... I mean..." he curses himself for stumbling over his words, never has he had issues with speaking. Meanwhile you are grinning broadly moving to set next to him on the fallen branch "Have I rendered the great Thorin Oakenshield speechless? I was simply building a fire my king" you do a mock bow while something stirs within him at your simple jest. He glares though there is no malice behind it while you chuckle shuffling closer "Thorin, whats wrong? You look awfully tense. If this is about your hair, I overstepped, I'm sor-"
"Amlanthi sulla dĂȘ astĂą." the words tumble from his lips quickly while your face goes blank as you process what he said; You mean everything to me.
Thorin inhales deeply reaching into his pocket gripping the bead tightly finally saying the words that have been begging to escape for months "AmrĂąl astĂ»/astĂź." He closes his eyes afraid of your reaction but they open when a hand cups his face gently your eyes are bright cheeks flushed. After a beat you surge forward lips pressing against his own, you try and pour all your love and devotion into it as you bury your fingers into his hair. "I love you too." he brushes a finger down your cheek breathing shakily "Truly?" you kiss him again gentler this time "KurduĂȘ. My soul aches for you. My heart beats for you. I have loved you in silence for so long."
Thorin feels he may implode from joy at your words. Finally he speaks cupping your face gently forehead reasting against your own "There are no words to describe what I feel for you AmrĂąlimĂȘ. But I cannot imagine a future without you by my side." You grin broadly nudging his side "I thought I was. now what where those words you used," Thorin rolls his eyes as you repeat his words back to him "An irksome companion who never gives you a moments peace."
He chuckles fiddling with a piece of your hair "I meant that in jest." you sigh dramatically "Well your life would be rather dull without me." he rolls his eyes a soft smile on his face as he takes out the bead he crafted "That it would AmrĂąlimĂȘ. May I?" You nod falling silent as he gently puts the bead in place just behind your ear. Grinning you lean closer your lips brushing over his "Stuck with me now."
"I would have it no other way." Thorin does not think he will ever get enough of your lips pressed against his own. "I have one for you as well."
"What!?"
Smiling brightly you reach into your pack taking out a small blue pouch containing a singular intricate bead. This time it is you who stumbles over your words "I erh, made it a while ago. But could never... I mean...May I?" he nods face flushed as you carefully braid his hair attaching the bead to the end "I will wear it with pride my love."
"Marry me." Thorin curses himself as the words tumble out. He had planned a much more romantic proposal than this but unfortunately life had simply got in the way. You look up from the documents on the table in front of you over blinking at him "What?"
He takes a deep breath repeating his words "Marry me. I had planned a proposal worthy of you. You deserve a grand ceremony where I would boast about you being mine and you would rule at my side." he smiles taking your hands in his "But I cannot wait. My heart belongs to you and if you are willing I wish to bind our souls as one."
You smile warmly melting into his arms. Truthfully Dis and several others thought you already married. Fili and Kili already called you Irakâadad/Irakâamad. "I wish for nothing more than to know you are officially mine." he chuckles lips brushing over your own "I have been and always will be yours my love."
The ceremony is small and simple with only five guests and the officiant. Dis, Fili, Kili, Balin and your Uncle. You exchange marriage beads and rings both beautifully handcrafted and worn proudly. "KhĂźĂȘ." Thorin breaths against your lips before kissing you deeply hand cupping the back of your head. Your small family cheer handing around goblets of wine which you drink happily.
Retreating back to your room, a simple affair with only a bed, desk and small bathroom. Thorin pulls you into his arms "IbinĂȘ, AmrĂąlimĂȘ, Nin DĂ»r/Dul NĂźn." you flush at his words gently carding your fingers through his hair "Sasakhabi abnamul YasthĂ»n." he grins broadly "YasthĂ»n. Perhaps my favourite title." you chuckle running your hands over his chest "Stuck with me now, forevermore."
"Then I am the luckiest dwarf in existence AmrĂąlimĂȘ." he kisses you again pressing you against his body warmth enveloping the both of you. "I don't know what our future holds but I swear I will always protect you." smiling you lean your forehead against his own breathing deeply, holding him tightly "I am glad I found you Thorin Oakenshield." he smiles, the one reserved only for you "Thank you for not giving up on me."
"Never."
"For eternity?" you grin closing the small gap "For eternity."
