I was thinking about what the ethic is in The Giving Tree. I think one of them is that you can only love purely when you are poor. The story ends with the boy coming back to the tree after years of being away living his life. He has nothing and is near death. The tree also has nothing because she has given everything to the boy. At this moment, the boy is able to completely rest on the tree stump. He has no more worries, as his entire life is behind him. Reflecting on the poverty of both the tree and the boy in the story reminds me of the words of Jesus to the rich man. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” Jesus wants us to be poor in the same way the Giving Tree wanted the boy to be poor. It’s because He wants us to be happy. He knows we can’t be happy as long as we love other things besides Him. The irony at the end of the story is that the boy and the Giving Tree are the richest that they’ve ever been in their lives.
