The Comedy of Terrors (1963) When Waldo is down on his luck and needs to obtain money to support his drinking habit and keep a roof over his head, he and his ‘partner’ embark on a new plan. Bump off the townspeople, including his landlord to make money! Whilst I enjoyed what the Comedy of Terrors was doing when I watched it, I just found it lacking. Not from the performances of the actors, which I found great and between them all have immense acting experience. But just in the general feel of things, the film felt leggy at times, and areas felt drawn out, jokes were sometimes good but other times quite flat. I can see this as a product of it’s time, and can see this being under appreciated, even by people like myself as I’m not from that era. As time progresses, so does humour and whilst I can appreciate many forms, a lot of this fell just short of the mark for me. The film was shot in a 20 day period with 12 hour a day shoots, which shows! But it’s not all doom and gloom and when the film gets it right it is funny, just not enough for me. It’s restoration from @arrowvideo is great though and really manages to bring the film back to life! The soundtrack is your typical 60s backdrop, but the film never really establishes itself, failing to be scary or particularly funny either. Overall, if you’re looking for a bit of 60s film history, this combines some great talent into one movie.
