For the last eight years, Thursday has been my prep day. The day I cleaned and organized my kit, and ran any final errands to pick up last minute products for the weekend. . Thursday was the my last day off before the weekend. Before three consecutive eight to twelve hour days on my feet, either on location for weddings or in the studio holding bridal previews. . It’s bluesday Tuesday! This is little thing I’ve been wanting to do for a while where I post a blues every Tuesday. Tuesday seems to be my toughest day of the week- it doesn’t have the weird anxious energy of Monday, and it’s not yet Wednesday (hump day). So maybe coming up with an excuse to post a blues tune could be a way to brighten Tuesday’s up! Today’s blues is “Hesitation Blues”, which I first heard Dave Van Ronk do- but I think his version is very much derived from Reverend Gary Davis. However, there’s another version of “Hesitation Blues” that I heard Steely Dan play on Mary McPartland’s piano jazz. They got their version from Louis Armstrong. Eventually found Armstrong’s version on “Louis Armstrong plays W.C. Handy”- I think W.C.Handy actually wrote the tune. I love the chord progression- there’s something so New Orleans about it.
