Did you know that bees are responsible for one out of every three bites you take? Solitary bees and honeybees are fantastic pollinators and deserve our thanks for all the amazing fruits and vegetables they make for us! As many people at my work know, bees are a huge passion of mine and I’ve had the distinct pleasure of getting up close and personal with them several times! The SBH hammies have even adopted several bees from the @cottagebotanicals hives! We love our bees, and you should too. Of course, Queen #Bee is both named after the very important matriarch of the hive, but also the comic book character. The queen bee is responsible for laying tons of eggs everyday - it’s a busy job when you’re the momma bee of everyone in the hive. All the workers are female - they raise the baby bees, clean the hive, turn nectar into honey, take care of the queen, protect the hive, and of course forage for nectar and pollen! In contrast, the drones (the males!) sit around and eat honey until they’re kicked out. Then, they find a new queen, mate, and die immediately after. Just like bees, we have our girlie hammies to thank for being such tough workers and independent mommas! While they may not have a whole hive of workers (sisters) to help them rear their offspring, they have us! You can help protect and encourage our bee populations by planting native gardens full of pollinators, limiting your pesticide usage, and just leaving them “bee”. Bees are fairly docile (and adorable) critters and if they don’t feel threatened will happily go on their merry way to find beautiful flowers. Thanks bees! 🐝🐝🐝 #thebeesknees #bees #honey #queenbee #girlpower #pollination https://www.instagram.com/p/BqVjtBZAkf7/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ngqchjkg3foi
