The Mathematical Genius of Bees
Though bees are small creatures, their minds are capable of much, much more! They can solve math problems even with brains no larger than a sesame seed. In lab studies, bees have demonstrated the ability to understand the concept of zero, count up to four, and consistently find the shortest route between flowers, which is analogous to the traveling salesman problem. Bees instinctively calculate the most efficient path to collect nectar and return to the hive, without any GPS or algorithms. Within their hives, the honeycombs are built from perfect hexagons, which is a shape proven to use the least material for the most storage. Bees have been perfecting this efficiency for over 100 million years. Bees also do a dance that looks almost like a wiggle, and this movement communicates the distance and direction of food sources, turning math and motion into language.
