Painting this morning at the birthplace of historic preservation… the Steven’s-Lather house, and paying homage to the people with heart, soul and vision for historic preservation as well as civic pride and passion for history. The Steven’s-Lather house is a four-story residence on S. Battery St. overlooking White point Gardens with a view of Fort Sumter. It was built in 1843 by a prosperous merchant name Samuel N. Stevens. The property sold in 1870 to Colonel Richard Lathers, a millionaire cotton broker, banker, and executive from New York. After serving in the union army during the Civil War, Colonel lathers purchased the home with the intent to host northern dignitaries and reconcile relations between north and south.
