I received a tip from a professional (I think My lighting professor) back in school that if you aren’t working on a show or don’t have a lot of experience but want to build a portfolio, you can design for a show and mention “This is what I picture when I think of this show” or whatever. Basically concept art to show your style when just getting into the industry.
Is this a real thing in professional theatre, encouraged for new career-type folks, or discouraged because it’s not actual real-world experience?
If it’s legit, it’s a good tip to pass on to college kids still working on their portoflios/design style. If not, it’s something to be aware of when building portfolios
