Soooo I might've used the character creator and some.mods to let me Gpose my character from an old spacer thing I was doing with some friends. She's sort of Appalachians codes mixed with a bit of Homage for Catalonia.
Meet Prudence Caldwell
Born on a backwater planet she grew up as a greasemonkey working on the various machines that kept their atmosphere breathable. She didn't so much have a knack for machines as she had to be useful around them to earn her keep.
It was a mining world and — though it wasn't the pinnacle of 'civilization' — it was a regular stop for freighters looking to refuel and bring cargo holds full of precious ship fuel back to the Galactic Core. The mines' toxic byproduct made the world hard to live on and the workers lives short and often painful. Pru kept herself to her machines out of self preservation; a good mechanic didn't have to ruin her lungs.
With some knowledge of machines and a little trial and error she set up her first still. Moonshining was frowned upon by the Core, though, and after a couple years in operation she found herself on a prison ship bound for a labour colony.
When the war broke out she fought with the Stellar People's Labour Front. Her fighting started on the very prison colony she'd been shipped to, and a captured ship later she was on Proxima learning to fix the ships they'd brought down for the Uprising to put back in the sky.
In the end, infighting claimed the Uprising. Four or five different liberation factions versus a single combined army turned from a straight-up war to guerilla attacks, and from there to a police state as Proxima was put back in line. Prudence hopped the last transport out before the crackdowns started.
These days she's the ship's mechanic aboard The Reckless, an aging transport ship turned smuggler. When jobs are lean she fires up the still she's made using the heat off the engines to give them some product to sell. Always one step ahead of the law, her only wish is to keep her crew flying.
