Something you always wanted to learn about: The Planets
I'm being a little generous with this one, and not just because it's roughly two decades out of date. When I think of something I always wanted to learn about, I remember my early days on the internet searching for sites that described these pieces of the solar system in precise detail. I had neatly ordered notebook pages filled with the information I had found, and I was quite proud of my collected knowledge, even though the numerical details never really stuck in my brain. But that was where my appreciation for the realm of the night sky began - with the planets.
This book is not filled with those numerical details that escaped my memory. Instead it takes another route that I've discovered an appreciation for, and combines the things we know about our solar neighborhood (or knew as of 2005) with the cultural context of how we came to know those things. Each chapter explores not only a planet but a theme: the romance of Venus, the science fiction inspired by Mars, the dedication behind the discoveries of Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. It's a love letter to both the wonders of our solar system and the evolving culture of astronomy.
Anyway, I'm three astronomy books deep in this bingo card and I haven't even covered the 'night sky' square yet. How many more can I shove in here? Stay tuned!
