While I am not a catholic by any stretch, my love for Mariners baseball could be seen as a kind of weird opus dei self-harm ritual, given that I always get waaayyy too attached to the team and then have to watch them eat shit in some way or another. Every time. Without fail.
But you don't get into the Mariners because you like a good team that wins, you don't like the Mariners for any of their records, you like the Mariners because there's a kind of narrative of a few really incredible players set against impossible odds. Edgar Martinez is one of my favorite hitters of all time, and at the end of his career he was still smashing homers while his vision failed him. But like, even when him and Ken Griffey JR were on the team, plus the rest of that dream team; there was that supreme narrative irony of "this team will never will never win the World Series" hanging over everything.
I can't wait to get my heart broken again.
