βLetβs go for a walk.β
Harris paused in the act of moving bacon to a paper towel to drain.Β He looked over his shoulder as Darcy padded into the kitchen, still rubbing her hair with a towel.Β She grinned at him, her cheeks flushed from her shower, an oversized t-shirt hanging low over her hips.Β βWhat?β he asked at last.
βI think we should go for a walk today,β Darcy said, walking up behind him.Β She reached around his side, trying to sneak a piece of bacon, and he moved the plate out of reach.Β Laughing, she retreated.Β βCβmon.Β We donβt have any other plans, right?β
βI have plans,β Harris pointed out.Β βThey involve my couch and a remote and my cat and maybe a pizza.β
βDoes that count as a plan?β Darcy opened a cabinet, grabbing some plates and stacking glasses on top.Β βIt sounds more like what you do when you donβt have a plan.β
βItβs a solid plan.βΒ Harris reached for the carton of eggs.Β βFried egg?β
βYes, please,β Darcy said, balancing everything against her hip with one hand and fishing silverware out of the drawer with the other.Β βAnd itβs a back up plan.Β At best.β
βOkay, maybe,β Harris admitted.Β He cracked an egg against the counter and broke it into the pan, waiting for it to settle before reaching for a second one.Β βBut counter point, itβs cold out there.β
βItβs barely autumn,β Darcy said, setting the table. Β When everything was laid out, she pulled the towel off of her head, giving her damp curls a quick shake.Β βYou barely need a jacket.β
βI always need a jacket.βΒ Harris checked the heat.Β βExcept when Iβm here.Β With my cat and a nice blanket.β
βWe can do that tomorrow,β Darcy said.Β βFor once, weβre up early, and we have no plans and I want to put on something cute and go outside and walk around.βΒ She opened the fridge, grabbing the orange juice.Β βOkay if I make toast?β
βYeah, there should be some cinnamon swirl bread in there.Β Grab the butter?β
βAs if I would forget the butter,β Darcy said, her nose firmly in the air.Β She shook the orange juice in hs direction.Β βThereβs not much time to take advantage of autumn, Harris, I have to take advantage of it when I can.β
βItβs three months, just like the other seasons, isnβt it?β
βYeah, but I can only be fashionable in autumn.Β Thus, Iβd like to leave your apartment.βΒ Β
Harris stopped in place, the spatula hanging in mid air.Β He took a deep breath.Β Released it.Β βExplain.β
βOkay.β She dropped a couple of slices of bread into the toaster and pushed down the lever with a little too much enthusiasm.Β βWinter.Β Great.Β Love winter.β
βNo, you donβt,β Harris said, arms folded over his chest.Β βIf you had a choice, you would retreat into a literal pile of pillows and blankets and not come out for three months.β
βYeah, fuck SHIELD for turning down my work from home proposal last November.βΒ She broke a banana off from the bunch and tossed it on the cutting board.Β βBut fashionably, winter is fine.Β I look good in a soft sweater and a dumb knit hat with a pompom on top, you know?βΒ Β
She slid a knife from the block and cut the banana in half with one firm strike.Β Harris tried not to wince.Β βI do know,β he said, resisting the urge to mess with his eggs.Β βNo one can work a dumb hat with half your confidence.β
Darcy grinned.Β βIβm choosing to take that as a compliment, just so you know.β
βExactly as intended.βΒ Harris reached for the handle of the air fryer basket.Β βSo what does that-β
βSo winter is good, but when youβre already someone a bit on the zaftig side-βΒ Darcy, gave a little bump and grind with her hips and Harris lost track of what he was doing with the air fryer for a second.Β βYou really donβt need three additional layers and a puffer jacket on top of everything, and itβs hard to be cute when thereβs about three square inches of your face showing between your scarf and your hat.β
βDonβt know what you mean, does wonders for me,β Harris said.Β He gave the potatoes a shake and put the basket back.Β A couple more minutes.Β βBoots?β
βClompy boots with waffle soles,β Darcy said, and she sounded properly morose.Β βSo itβs not great.Β Then youβve got spring, and spring, you can ditch the thick jacket sometimes, and wear floral prints and pastels and all that shit because it might not look good on you but youβre so sick of gray, dirty, half-melted snowbanks that slapping a crocus pattern across your tits is a coping mechanism.β
Harris grinned at his eggs.Β βAre you sure this is a universal problem, because it sounds kind of like wereβ getting into some real particulars here and-β
βI swear to god I will make a twitter poll next March and you can eat those words, MacIntyre.Β The women of this city are about ready to chew through the drywall long before the first sixty degree day.Β Sometime in mid February, everyone thinks they can wear pastel yellow and let me tell you-βΒ She paused, pointing the knife at him.Β βThey cannot.β
βRight,β Harris said.Β He pointed at the fruit bowl.Β βApples?βΒ She reached for one, and Harris went back to the eggs.Β βBut other than that-β
βSpring.Β Rain.β Darcy sliced the apple with a couple of quick passes of the knife.Β βYou can be in the cutest outfit in the world and once it starts pouring, youβre just going to look like a pastel drowned rat, runny mascara and all.β
Harris nodded.Β βSo spring is, what, cute but ill-advised?β
βHarsh, but true,β Darcy said with a grin as the toaster popped.Β She reached for the toast and the butter..Β βAnd that gets us to Summer.β
βRight.Β Short skirts and a lot of plunging necklines,β Harris mused, his voice dreamy.Β βLittle strappy sandals.β
Darcy grinned at him.Β βAre you done?β
βCrop tops,β he rushed out.Β βOkay.Β Iβm-Β Wait, no, no, bikinis.βΒ He slapped a hand on the counter.Β βOkay.Β Now Iβm done.β
βBitch, when have you seen me in a bikini?β Darcy asked, and she was laughing.
βEvery night.Β In my dreams.βΒ Harris ducked when she threw a tea towel at him.Β Laughing, he grabbed a pot lid, holding it up in front of him like a shield. Β βHa! Do your worst!β
βPretty sure my βworstβ actually involves a bikini,β Darcy mused.Β βIβll consider a tankini.β
βI will give you my credit card right now.βΒ Harris flipped the eggs.Β βDonβt tempt me.β
βYouβre good for my ego,β Darcy said, sliding the sliced apples onto a plate.Β βSo summerβs good because all the cute clothes, all the designer sunglasses and big, floppy hats.β
βI am seeing exactly zero down sides here,β Harris agreed.
βHumidity thatβs like trying to breathe through a wet sock and temperatures so high that itβs like being baked alive when you expose any part of your skin to direct sunlight,β Darcy said, her voice dire.
βOkay, so thatβs not the-β
She leaned over the kitchen island, her mouth set in a scowl.Β βBoob sweat.β
The snort of laughter caught him so off guard that he nearly dropped the pan.Β Struggling to pull himself together, he made the mistake of looking at Darcy, who stared at him, stone faced, and cupped her boobs in her hands.
Harris lost it.Β
He managed to get the pan back on the burner before he doubled over, laughing hysterically as me made a futile grab for the counter.Β He missed and toppled over, laughing all the way down.Β His ass hit the tile, and he just sat there, laughing so hard that his stomach hurt..
Darcy looked around the end of the kitchen island.Β βHas anyone told you that you have the exact sens of humor of a twelve year old boy?β she asked, and despite the question, there was a certain smugness to her smile.Β
βFuck you,β Harris managed, between little eruptions of giggles.Β βYouβre hysterical.β
Darcy flipped her hair over her shoulder with a flick of her hand.Β βYes, thank you, I know,β she said, stepping over Harrisβs legs to collect the eggs.Β She smiled down at him.Β βSo summer has its pros and cons.β
βRight,β Harris said, resting his head on the cabinet door.Β βAnd that leaves-β
βAutumn.βΒ Darcy gave a firm nod.Β βAutumn, the time of cute little ankle boots and super soft leggings and the kind of plaid wool skirts that fall just right.βΒ She posed for a moment with the frying pan, one foot tucked behind the other, a hip popped, her head back.Β βThe softest sweaters, and little crop top jackets and tartan scarves that frame your face and make your neck seem long and elegant.β
Harris smiled up at her, one knee drawn up so he could rest an arm on it.Β βI see youβve put a lot of thought into this.β
She did a little spinning step, setting the pan on the island.Β βLetβs go apple picking.β
Harris pretended to consider that.Β βDoes Central Park offer that now?β
βWe can leave this city, you now.βΒ She leaned over.Β βLetβs go.Β We can pick apples and choose a pumpkin straight from the fields and eat apple cider donuts and go to arts festivals and take pictures of the fall foliage.β
βWeβre taking pictures of dead leaves now?β Harris asked, rolling to his feet.Β βWhy?β
βInstaaaaaaaaagram,β Darcy sing-songed.Β She folded her arms on the island and leaned her chin on them, peering up at him from under fluttering lashes.Β βLetβs go.Β Fall is calling.β
He gave up, and heβd never felt better about giving up in his life.Β βBreakfast first.Β Then weβll brave Autumn in New York.β
Darcy smiled at him.Β βI always loved that song.β
He nodded, and reached for the bacon.Β βItβs growing on me.β
