Manifesting Assad Zaman as Owen Mallory!!!
Okay finished the Everlasting! Which both means I'm Finally done all the Hugo novel and novella nominees AND finally have a sincere answer to people asking if there's a romantasy novel I like and recommend without reservation.
I reached for the collar of my jacket, hands shaking, and folded it down so you could see the wreckage of my throat. It was not the handsome, dashing sort of scar that every soldier privately hopes for. It was fat and wormy, stretching the skin unevenly over my collarbone and knotting over my windpipe like a badly tied cravat. The first civilian who'd seen the whole of it had gasped once before pressing her hands over her mouth. But her shock had quickly transitioned to fawning admiration, as if the scar was a medal I couldn't take off. She'd kissed it - sweetly, even eagerly - as if she'd been appointed by the state to thank me for my sacrifice, and I'd escaped her flat seconds before the shaking fits began.

You looked away again, but not before I saw the hunger in you. That same burning, aching desire I'd felt as a boy, and again when I'd stood in Vivian's office - to matter, to make something good and great out of the pitiful meat of my life.

Further into The Everlasting and man Thatcher really left a mark on English culture huh
a friend just asked me if Dominion had a flag which, I don't believe the book ever mentioned a design. So I'm going to go over some thoughts I have on design concepts for Dominion's flags:
1st/Original loop:
I think the flag here would start with a red field, which is a pretty obvious choice for Dominion. My personal reasoning is it's red because of course it is, but in-universe symbolism might be things like Sir Una's cape, the blood of the soldiers fighting for the freedom/prosperity of Dominion, prosperity, bravery, etc. The other color on this flag would be white, and I think it would be used in a simple design/pattern. The design would be simple, bold, and very modern. Definitely inspired by European flags from the last 150 years or so. The white would stand for purity, sanctity, perhaps the might of the dragons if a citizen was looking at the design from a perspective of Una's story. Overall it would communicate power and modernity, but it wouldn't read as overtly imperial to a reader, given that I'm drawing from history for some of my ideas here.
Loop 2/higher control:
This flag's design would be quite similar to the above one, however I would want its design elements to read more imperial/fascistic to a reader. The flag would still have a red field, but this time the other colors are white and gold. Specifically a gold fringe I think would work well, along with any other sort of gold accents to the white pattern. The pattern this time would be less abstract and geometric, but more of a tangible concept/object. It would be something to communicate power just by looking at it. Overall the flags would be similar, but one seems more aggressive in its symbolism. The color symbolism for the red and white might stay the same, but the white could also be given "purity" in a racial sense and not just a religious sense. I'd also give "prosperity" to gold, with its symbolism being tied to wealth, prospering, and "a golden era."
Loop 3/Vivian Queenship:
For this flag, I'd like to keep the same three colors, but the design would be the most different out of all of them. It would definitely lean more heavily on older European flag designs, to evoke the "monarchy" aspect that now has taken over Dominion. Probably something a bit more ornate and less simple and geometric, like you'd see in a modern flag. (Yes older flags could be and were simple and geometric but I'm thinking sort of like the old French flag of white field with gold fleur-de-lis). I don't think this flag would feature any symbols directly related to Una, but would draw more of the old queens of Dominion. Perhaps a crown symbol, or some other pattern that would also have to be constructed by readers that could plausibly belong to Vivian's past iterations. This flag might even have a white or gold field instead of red, but I'd have to think about it. I'm mostly just jotting down thoughts without much of a tangle image in my head for each design other than the basic outlines. The symbolism of the colors here might change to have similar values but "seem" different. Instead of the red being the blood of the "soldiers who sacrificed for Dominion," it could be courage, bravery, honor, protection. The white would still be purity/sanctity (in a religious sense), and the gold could be again wealth/prosperity or even "returning to a more rightful era/return of the golden age."
Whatever happens after Vivian dies:
I honestly can't make many guesses here simply because we don't know much about what becomes of the political entity of Dominion at the end of the book. I'd like to think that whatever political entity controls that territory would have a green flag (as it fits neatly in with the rest of the story) but I truly can't speculate. I'd give it a green flag personally.
Finished the first act of The Everlasting and I am properly hooked now.
But also I need to find/create a book club or something I can browbeat into reading this and Some Desperate Glory as a pair and discuss the comparison.
