I don't understand it. I doubt I ever will. How do you see happiness here? How do you look at our angel and not see how devastated he is? How do you reconcile this heart breaking before your eyes to claim this is a happy ending? And please think before you come at with me with "not being able to be together is part of why they chose to allow their universe to end, so that they would be free to love each other." How exactly did they choose that, then? With all that big juicy free will they don't have? At best. At the very best. Crowley has just given up. And because of that, this time, he says what he thinks Aziraphale wants to hear - "I choose the world." At worst, Crowley has just given up. And because of that, this time, he says "I don't choose you." Either way, Aziraphale hears both, loud and clear. Either way, GO3 Crowley is willing to sacrifice Aziraphale for a hypothetical. Which neither S1, S2, or Book Crowley would have ever considered in the realm of possibility. This isn't character development. This isn't a role reversal. This isn't selfless love. This is characters being written into a corner and the universe being written into oblivion.
If this is what you think a loving relationship looks like, perhaps it's time to consider gaining some Psychoanalytic and Interpersonal Literacy. And I concede. GO3 was indeed a Cosmic Horror. Because the ending of Crowley and Aziraphale and all of the fantasy and light and magic of the Good Omens Universe was truly, astoundingly, horrific. But hey, at least we got the real world out of it. The one that all of Crowley and Aziraphale's love and molecules are made of. There's a little Aziraphale and Crowley in you, and me, in dolphins, and dinosaurs, in sunsets, in Hitler, syphilis, PCP, PFOAs, diet coke - a list of endless wonders.
The one most obvious difference when you compare GO3's Decision with the Ineffable Almost Heroic Sacrifice in the original book (which is something I have done in various formations many times. It's basically the one moment in previous GO Canon that even remotely resembles the direction GO3 decided to go in...) is, well, in the Book, Aziraphale is the one who suggests they stay and risk their lives for the Humans (in a moment that was essentially deleted entirely from the GO1 version of that scene) , while in GO3 they have basically 'swapped roles', with Crowley being the one who comes up with the idea of sacrificing themselves for the sake of a 'Godless Universe'.
But it's more then that⌠in Book Omens, Aziraphale is the one who first decides to try to sacrifice himself by fighting Literal Satan and talks Crowley into helping him, yeah, but it is an incredibly important moment for Crowley as well. It's a culmination for both of their individual arcs about their relationship with Humanity and their jobs. It's just a beautiful moment of resolve from Aziraphale, showing that despite his hedonism and selfishness and hypocrisy, he does have a moral code that's flat-out better than what we see come from Heaven, especially now that he's become disillusioned with his higher-ups and doesn't even try to put himself on a Moral High-Ground compared to Crowley.
And it's also such a great moment for Crowley's character, after a whole arc of being forced to confront all of his fears about Hell, to realize that as self-serving as he is, when he's got nothing more to lose, he wants to do this brave and selfless thing. As a huge Book Crowley fan this line of internal monologue always makes me feral. He's been trapped by his fears of 'getting in troubles' with Hell for 6000 years, and now he's finally free and he knows that what he wants to do is beat his shitty boss in the face with a tire iron and save the Humans!!
And it's, y'know, kinda important that if you have one character talk their friend/partner into doing a Heroic Sacrifice with them, to see that the friend comes to actually understand why they should risk their life like that, that it means something to them as just an individual person.
Because the problem with the GO3 'Sacrifice' isn't really that it 'gives' Crowley a moment that Aziraphale 'lost'. It's the way that it goes out of it's way to make this moment all about Crowley to such an absolute degree. It's the culmination of his relationship with Humanity and his arc about being free from Heaven and Hell and his arc about challenging God, and the narrative seems to go out of its way to emphasize that Aziraphale only goes along with it as a demonstration of his love and trust of Crowley, his relationship arc with Crowley, how he's trying to make up for not listening to Crowley and being a ""Taker"".
They swapped out a moment of (Almost) Heroic Sacrifice that was led by Aziraphale, but was extremely powerful for both of these characters, to a moment that centers Crowley first and foremost and makes Aziraphale's role to just be The Boyfriend. And I think this is such an astronomical-scale downgrade for the note their story ends on.
Just remembered that Prime called Crowley and Aziraphale "partners in eternity" and how much i loved what a fucking adorable term that is, but how it's not TRUE, they never GOT to be that.
Because they died. They aren't enjoying eternity together like they were meant to. Because they were erased.
And i'm just so fucking angry about it.

From The Andalite Chronicles Chapter 29
I want to focus in here on this little bit where Elfangor starts to explain something, gets discouraged and stops himself. Then Loren encourages him to continue, explicitly showing that she is interested in what he has to say.
The Andalite Chronicles is full of these little back and forth moments of them talking about themselves, sharing bits of Earth and Andalite. I feel like it encapsulates their dynamic very succinctly. They are interested in what the other has to say and actively enjoy learning about each other.
Sadly I feel like this dynamic is largely missing from Axâs interactions with the other Animorphs. Tobias and Cassie being the exceptions, the other kids get annoyed with Ax explaining things the second they donât find it interesting.
I know that part of it is a writing device to keep the information relevant but cut out extraneous detail. But I do notice it as a pattern that they want Ax for information exactly as long as heâs useful and no longer. I know Iâm not the only one that felt a bit miffed about how Ax is treated in The Decision for basically having a chance to be rescued from earth and being excited for it. But that threatens his role as âAlien expertâ and the team is hostile to it. The same way all the kids are hostile to each other when they either step outside their roles or fufil them in a way they donât like.
<You know, Ax, thereâs just the two of us now. We could probably drop the whole âprinceâ thing.> He paused, then added, <You could just call me âThe Jake formerly known as Prince.â>
Aaaaaand I reached THAT part. I didn't know it was an actual line from the books and I got totally blindsided by it... I might have screamed a bit lol
Yay!!!!! I feel like no one knows that my URL is an actual quote from an actual Animorphs book instead of being merely a pun on the protagonist's name/title. And if people do know that, they don't know the whole history with The Artist Formerly Known As Prince. Oh well.
