Part of the appeal of The Clearing is in JJJJJerome Ellis’s intellectual might, his insightful examination of the intersections of blackness and disfluency, touching on sociology, biology, history and more; part is the presentation, as in an academic lecture, all is told with utter respect for its audience. It is uncommon for didactic music to be engaging at all, never mind appropriate for repeat listening – yet this is genuinely enlightening and, in its wide-ranging instrumental explorations, contains plenty of ideas to fixate upon with subsequent visits.
