(Art by: @lucidrops ). What is it about fragrance that makes us happy, sad or that brings back a memory that we had long forgotten? Fresh baked bread or the smell of bath towels and sheets that have been lined dried. A fresh can of coffee, with that pssst sound and smell. I have always treasured perfume, oils and scents. My Father was a total enabler. My parents were divorced when I was still very young. Custody of my brother and I, was awarded to my Father. My Mom wasn't a factor in my upbringing. She simply wasn't there, but Mace was. He taught me many things and love of perfume was one of them along with the power of scent. When ironing my clothes, he put scented water in the steam iron. Kiku by Fabergé, which smells like today's Jean Naté. He even sent me to the Wendy Ward's Charm School, at Montgomery Wards. So, that no one could say that I wasn't a "proper" young woman, even though I was raised by a single parent, who was male and a black, at that. When I finally met my Mom again, when I graduated high school, I went to visit her in New Orleans. The moment I saw her vanity and all of the perfume bottles and decanters, I knew she and I shared more than the same face, we both loved perfume and the like. Chanel, Nina Ricci's L'Air du Temps, Norell, Shalimar and Estee Lauder, you name it and she had it. One of the memories my Dad had taken from her, was Ellen's love of scent and he passed it on to me, the only way he knew how.
