They have such fundamentally different ideas on relationships that the two are always at a crossroads on what the importance of those connections are. It’s always going to be a source of contention, that Thackery puts so much into them and Dinah is so flippant on the idea. That lack of understanding can lead to hurt feelings on either side and can only cause more trouble in the future as they grow and act on their own understanding (Thackery settles down and Dinah stays flighty).
