this might have been submitted before I posted the last chapter lmao but I have no idea!! my mental health is sort of like a see-saw at the moment and I need to see a doctor about my fatigue bc my roommate has told me that taking three hour naps in the middle of the day on top of sleeping like, nine hours a night is Probably a Problem lmao
Iâve run through most of my prewritten stuff by this point so the next chapter hasnât even been started yet! I had almost all of last chapter written before I did the mountain chapter actually and just needed to fill in some gaps so honestly it might take... a while rip
Iâm really grateful for all the support Iâve been getting from readers, and how patient everyone has been with me!! Iâm definitely not giving up on tgia anytime soon ;3c
tragically as a relatively new author (Iâve been writing fanfic for a little over a year now!) Iâm not great at uhhhh structure lmao, I tend to dive into ideas without planning anything out. Which means that often the twists and turns the story takes surprises me as much as all yâall!!Â
Iâve learned a lot writing the fic - including quite a lot of spoilers when people asked me how I was gonna address Dunyâs backstory that hasnât come up in the show yet lmao
I think not having a good end point is part of the resistance Iâm having to writing the fic honestly so Iâll try sit on that to figure it out. I think Iâll probably end it in a place similar to the end of s1 of the Witcher and then maybe have a sequel fic when s2 comes out??
sorry this is probably way more in depth of an answer than you wanted but I hope it answers something at least!

For the past week and a have I have been absolutely obsessed with âto grow with adversaryâ no doubt the best au and fic on ao3. Right down to the characterization and smooth beautiful flow. Jaskier telling ciri the love story actually made me cry. I love how you portray jaskier, yen, and renifri, incredible. I am sosososo looking forward to the dragon chapter, and those following as well. Have a good day.
adsfsADSFGH THANK YOU
i had a LOT of fun writing that little story - and for those of yâall who donât remember, iâll put it under the cut ;3c
âOnce upon a time,â Jaskier begins, bringing his hand up to card softly through Ciriâs hair, âThere was a little songbird who lived in the forest. He was a happy little bird, with everything that a bird needs in the world to be content.â
âLike worms!â Ciri pipes up, looking pleased with herself.
âLots of worms,â Jaskier confirms, ruffling her hair briefly, âSo many worms. And then, one day, a wolf arrived in the forest.â
âOh no,â Ciri whispers, because wolves are the villain of many a childrenâs bedtime story.
âThe wolf was white as snow, and the songbird thought that he was beautiful. Perhaps the most beautiful creature the songbird had ever seen.â
Ciri hums thoughtfully, and Jaskier can feel it against his chest. âWolves are scary.â
âThe songbird didnât think so.â Jaskier says consideringly, âIn fact, the songbird followed after the wolf, because songbirds are silly little things who love beauty. They like to sing about it, you know? To sing about all of the most beautiful things.â
âDid the wolf eat him?â Ciri asks.
âYou would think so! But no.â Jaskier shakes his head, âThe little songbird started to sing about the wolf, about his beautiful pelt and his glittering teeth and his eyes like molten gold. Everyone else in the forest avoided the wolf, but the songbird was not frightened in the least, for he saw what others did not.â
âLike what?â
âThe wolf defended the forest, scaring all the scary hunters away. He did it, even though it was a thankless task. Even though it didnât stop anyone in the forest from being afraid of him. He was a wolf, after all, and they are frightening creatures.â
âSo heâs a nice wolf.â Ciri says decisively, and Jaskier laughs. His laughter makes Ciri bounce a little on his chest, making her giggle as well.
âYes. And the little songbird wanted everyone to know, and so he sang about all of the wolfâs kind deeds. Until one day, when the little bird was resting, he heard a voice call out from the bottom of his tree.
âLittle bird,â said the wolf, when he was certain he had the songbirdâs attention, âWhy do you follow me?â
âBecause I think you are beautiful.â The little songbird said honestly.
âI am not beautiful.â The wolf denied, âI am frightening.â
âMaybe so,â The songbird replied, âBut that does not make you any less beautiful.â
The wolf was confused, and so he went away, and the little bird continued singing his song.â
âThe wolf needs a hug.â Ciri declares loudly, and Jaskier contains his snort. Out of the mouths of babes indeed. Jaskier had almost the same thought when heâd met Geralt all those years ago in Posada.
âThe next day,â Jaskier continues the story instead of replying, âThe wolf heard the songbird singing of him again. And so he went up to the little songbirdâs tree.
âLittle bird,â said the wolf, when he was certain he had the songbirdâs attention, âWhy do you sing of me?â
âBecause I love you.â The little songbird said honestly.
âYou do not love me,â The wolf denied, âYou do not know me.â
âI know that you protect us, without a thought of thanks.â The songbird replied, âI know that you are kind, even when the world is cruel. It makes you beautiful.â
The wolf was confused, and so he went away, and the little bird continued singing his song.â
Jaskier pauses, waiting for Ciri to interrupt again, but the little girl remains silent. He only knows sheâs still awake by the way her fingers continue to trace the pattern of his doublet.
âA week later, the wolf found himself back at the base of the songbirdâs tree.â Jaskier continues to tease his fingers through Ciriâs hair, wondering if sheâll let him braid it when the story is over.
ââLittle bird,â said the wolf, when he was certain he had the songbirdâs attention, âWhy do you love me?â
âBecause you need to ask.â The little songbird said honestly.
âYou do not love me.â The wolf denied, âYou only think you do.â
âIs thinking so different from being?â The little songbird asked, âYou are alone. The only wolf in the forest. But I love you, so you can be less alone.â
âI am a wolf.â The wolf pointed out, âAnd you are a songbird. This cannot be love. You must stop singing.â
âI am a songbird,â The songbird agreed, âAnd you are a wolf. And this is love.â
âWhen you realize it is not, you must stop singing.â The wolf requested.
âVery well,â The little songbird agreed, âIf I ever do not love you, then I will stop singing.â
The wolf was content, and so he went away, and the little bird continued singing his song.â
I just read to grow in adveristy and it's so good!!! All the dialogues feel so natural and I love your writing style and the fic really brightened my day! I hope you have a good day too :)
asdfFSDGH thank you!! just for that you get a snippet ;3c
I promise I am still working on tgia yâall, the canon bits are just fighting me a little bit lmao and I might need to put off the Geralt-Renfri confrontation for another chapter because this shit is at like, 23 pages in my google docs and I havenât even written like half the scenes I need to oof
Under the cut and spoiler warning for my fic, to grow in adversity!
---
âYou are a strange creature, Jaskier.âÂ
The word creature hangs heavy in the air between them, and Jaskier tilts his head. If he listens, he can hear a noise like scales sliding against one another, a whispering accompaniment to the echoing drumbeat. âAs are you, Borch.â
The older manâs eyes flash, and he tilts his head in polite interest. âOh?â
âI have traveled the world, from kingdom to kingdom. I have faced monsters and men of all kinds, have seen miracles and curses and everything in between.â Jaskier pauses, staring directly into Borchâs eyes. He swears, for a second, they flash gold. âBut I have never met someone like you.â
âBecause of my philosophy - ?â Borch starts, but Jaskier cuts him off.
âI donât know what you are.â Jaskier says firmly, quietly, and he has all of Borchâs scattered attention focused on him like a laserbeam. Itâs almost uncomfortable, under those eyes, like a rabbit standing before a wolf.Â
But Jaskier has spent many years traveling at the side of a predator. Too long to be scared of the one in front of him, no matter how stupid that might make him.
âYou found Geralt and you asked him on this hunt. He came, not because of your dragon but because he saw someone he loved going into something stupid and decided that if they were going to do so, he might as well come along to soften the blow.â Jaskier informs the man simply. Though even he could tell Geralt that Yennefer did not need help, and that she was fully capable of getting herself out of (and into) trouble at her own pace. âHeâs not a soldier for hire. Heâs a protector.â
Borch is silent, still watching Jaskier carefully as though if he moved Jaskier would startle off. Fat chance of that, Jaskier was too stubborn for his own good.
âHeâs a protector.â Jaskier says again, firmly, âBut when it comes to watching his own back?â
There are words trapped behind Jaskierâs teeth, gritted back like sand in his molars. A fight song, a warning song, a battle cry.Â
âHe has a trigger happy witch on his side. And he has me.â
âI see no weapons here.â Borch says quietly, an echo to what was said to him when they had first met. Before a man had died with a snapped neck right in front of Jaskierâs eyes.
âWeapons can be more than steel, Borch Three Jackdaws. As well you know.â Jaskier replies, and then very purposefully places his hand against the body of his lute and taps with his fingers, matching the drumbeat of Borchâs magic.
Immediately, the manâs - if he is a man - magic responds, surging forward with the same whisper of scale against scale as it taps against Jaskierâs skin in pleased acknowledgement. On his part, Borch starts as though heâs been given a static shock, leaning back and widening his eyes in surprise.
âYouâre a man of firsts, and you say youâve run out of them in your long life.â Jaskier tells him, teeth bared in a smile, âBut I guarantee, this is the first time youâre meeting something like me.â
adsfsgdAFDSGH my sister said that if my google doc for tgia reaches over 200 pages sheâs not going to load it anymore
i feel i should mention that Iâm on 180 pages with every other chapter shrunk down into teeny tiny font with only the current stuff at full size. The new chapter starts on page 142,,,,
Eeeeeeeeeee! I love tgia SO MUCHâ¤ď¸ Any chance of more Renfri and Renfri&Yennefer? 𼺠The parallels on chapter 11 were f***ing amazing. (Thank you for writing the alive!Renfri we all deserved)
Renfri and Yennefer definitely get more scenes together! However, I do fear Iâm setting up some of my readers for failure oops. Renfri/Yennefer as a couple isnât going to happen within the scope of tgia for a few reasons
PUTTING THIS UNDER THE CUT, plus a little tgia snippet from the next chapter, because i have never been accused of being concise in my life
Honestly? They might have slept together at some point when Geralt and Yennefer were on the outs. Theyâre both very attractive individuals, danger and almost dying clearly gets Yennefer fired up, and Renfri has been known to make questionable sexual choices when it comes to Very Dangerous Individuals. So their relationship probably does include some flirting, some pushing of boundaries, some erotic subtext where Renfri has at least once put her sword under Yenneferâs chin and tilted it up
But when it comes to an actual relationship, Renfri at least is smart enough to put her foot down. Theyâre fine as rivals-friends-frenemies, but Renfri has some serious trust issues. Especially with mages. Especially with brotherhood mages. Yennefer knows Stregobor. She might not like him, but they belong to the same order.Â
And then thereâs the big thing between them: Yennefer wants kids. She wants, desperately, to be a mother. This is tied into her whole desperation for unconditional love thing she has going on. Renfri? Does not want kids. Absolutely against them. If she somehow gave birth tomorrow, that kid would be either adopted out or in Jaskierâs care quicker than you could say âcurse of the black sunâ. Itâs not even that Renfri doesnât like kids. Sheâd be a great weird-aunt-who-gives-an-8-year-old-a-real-sword-as-a-present. But Renfri does not want to be responsible for a childâs life and health and safety.
There are other little things. I love comparing and contrasting Renfri and Yennefer in tgia honestly because itâs so much fun? Yennefer was born a peasant and clings desperately to the power and prestige her magic affords her. Renfri was born a princess and cast it aside with pride so that she could be as unladylike as she pleased. Both of them knowing that power means sacrifice. Itâs a gilded cage to be sure, but itâs still a cage. Yennefer was willing to make the sacrifices and change herself to gain power while Renfri ran. Granted, Renfri ran for many reasons but letâs be real, tgia!Renfri wouldnât have stuck around to be married off and shuffled away to a quiet corner of the kingdom, out of sight out of mind.Â
Renfri was a princess, but her father was a King with male heirs. No matter what parallels I draw, her situation was vastly different from Princess Pavetta, sole heir of Queen Calanthe. And even then, even then with circumstances giving her great importance and a parent in power who should have been sympathetic to her plight, Pavetta was still a pawn on a board who was expected to marry a man she did not love for a political match and then become a background trophy. But even so, Pavetta would always have been Queen and the keeper of her bloodline, and so retained at least some power. Until she produced an heir of course, after which she would have become... less important to keep alive.
Renfri on the other hand? After Jaskierâs birth, sheâs a spare. Jaskier is the male heir, and so he got to leapfrog over Renfri in the inheritance. Renfri is officially a bargaining chip, one that doesnât even have to be compromised with because she is not going to be running the country. As best she could maybe hope to strike a political match with a prince and become a queen of somewhere not her homeland, with little power and easily replaceable. But Stregobor claimed Renfri had internal mutations, ones that might make her sterile, and so as a bride she would be... undesirable to say the least, except perhaps as a bride to a widower who already had heirs to follow him and needed no more. Perhaps to a second son who needed a bride but whose family tree needed no new branches. Which means she would likely be married off to a man, possibly very much her senior, probably not a King but perhaps a Lord (or lordâs son) currently in the kingâs favor. This choice would have been made for her, and she would have been expected to accept her new position with grace.
Yenneferâs father sold her away as well. Yenneferâs father struck a financial deal. Renfriâs fatherâs deal would have been political in nature, likely. Yennefer was bargained away to the brotherhood, Renfri would have been bargained away to a man.Â
(me, loudly: what about the implications of a mage organization comprised of all genders being called the brotherhood.)
Renfri and Yennefer each have. A lot of issues. A lot of these issues would make then incompatible for a longterm relationship. Renfri needs someone she can feel safe with, and that someone is never going to be a brotherhood mage, even if it could even be a mage at all. Yennefer needs someone who loves her unconditionally, who places her first, always. She needs to be someoneâs first priority. That doesnât necessarily have to be a romantic relationship mind you, but either way that person canât be Renfri. For Renfri, her first priority is Jaskier. Always. Just like Jaskierâs first priority will always be Renfri.Â
(He loves Geralt, he does, but if Geralt was his first priority then he would have told him about his sister long ago. Geralt is important to him, and he would move heaven and earth for the Witcher, but his sister is the only family he dares to claim and he defeated death itself in her name.)
Yennefer and Renfri both have serious control issues as well. Yennefer has literally mind controlled Geralt before, has manipulated him, and keeps him on his toes. She has this need to be in control, and for the most part Geralt is fine with following where she leads, and that makes her feel safe with Geralt. Up to and until she finds out that Geraltâs wish might be the reason why she loves him, and then all of a sudden it isnât her in control, itâs some untamable uncontrollable magic, and she absolutely flips her lid. Sheâs furious! She feels betrayed! All this time she thought she was in control, but then she finds out that Geralt tied their fates together or whatever.Â
(Thankfully, this isnât an issue in tgia, but Yennefer also doesnât exactly love Geralt in tgia so much as she loves being loved. Their major conflict in tgia is probably going to be about children, honestly, because Geralt sure as fuck doesnât want any.)Â
Renfri? Also would very much need to be in control of a relation. Maybe especially the sexual aspects of it considering her trauma involving that. Sheâs pretty, and that hasnât done her any favors. She bristles under restrictions and has broken the door of every cage people have tried to shove her into, including death though she had a little bit of help from Jaskier breaking out of that one. Sheâs protective, and secretive, and has trust issues a mile wide. She never even tells people her name. Every piece of personal information is carefully controlled. And who can blame her for her trust issues a mile wide? She was assaulted when she was fifteen. At least one man she willingly lay with literally murdered her the morning after (thanks Geralt). Renfri has issues with intimacy.
So yes, while I love throwing them in scenes together and I love their snarky terrible friendship where Yennefer proposes they do something terribly dangerous and Renfri is like â...i mean i GUESS iâll go.â unless she has a prior commitment OR it conflicts with her primary motivation of protecting Jaskier (getting too close to Geralt threatens this purpose), they wonât be getting together in the scope of the fic
which i hope people wonât be too disappointed by oof
sorry for writing you a whole essay about Renfri and Yennefer when you probably did not want it lmao, as you can see this has been pressing on my mind and tumbled about more than a little bit.Â
(honestly though if Pavetta hadnât been married to Duny and hopelessly in love with him, I might have shipped her and Renfri tbh. They had plenty in common, Pavetta had magic and would have been powerful enough to defend herself but wasnât a brotherhood mage, they got along well and had inside jokes, the only thing standing in the way of that ship (besides Duny and. you know. the whole death thing) is that Renfri wouldnât be too keen on becoming a queen/having to deal with shithead nobles again and the whole issue of Stregobor. But Renfri is a princess of a royal bloodline, was raised to be royalty with knowledge of court customs, and is a trained and blooded warrior. Letâs be real, Calanthe would have loved Renfri as a daughter-in-law. Renfri is exactly the ruthless sort of heir Calanthe would adore. There would be the issue of an heir of course, but as long as Pavetta was the one pregnant it wouldnât be a big deal because Pavâs the one with the important bloodline to carry on.)
ANYWAY you have been very patient with me so here is a tiny Yennefer and Renfri snippet from the next chapter -Â
As soon as theyâre alone, Renfri turns to Yennefer. âIâm going to kill you for this. One day. Sleep with one eye open, Witch.â
âCome now,â Yennefer teases, âIt canât have been that bad.â
âI genuinely canât tell if heâs criminally stupid or just ignoring the obvious.â Renfri hisses, âIâm carrying a sword. What kind of handmaiden beheads a bandit?â
âA very loyal one.â Yennefer offers, but sheâs trying way too hard to keep a straight face and Renfri can see the smile sheâs doing her damnest to contain.Â
âYouâre lucky I didnât kill him in his sleep the fourth time he started extolling your virtues for taking an âunpolished peasantâ under your wing.âÂ
That makes Yennefer break face and give a most unladylike snort that she covers with one dainty hand. âYou know,â She says, laughter still in her voice, âI wouldnât need him if you just agreed to go with me.â
âIf this is you trying to annoy me into going on an adventure with you, the answer is no.â Renfri immediately states. âNeed I mention the last time you talked me into going monster hunting for you? There was a fucking manticore nest, Yennefer.â
âYou enjoyed yourself, admit it.â Yennefer smiles with a flip of her hair.
Renfri presses her hand together and then presses them to her lips like sheâs about to start praying for Yennefer to get some sense in her empty, empty head. âYou are literally insane. You know that right? Stark raving mad.â

If Renfri is a black hole to magic does that mean she can just stomp though wards and they break? I'm just imagining someone dick of a lord who knows someone is after him hiring mages to put every protection around him keep and Renfri doesn't even notice she breaks all these wards when she breaks in to kill him.
good question!! the answer is: sort of?
Renfri can pass through wards like they arenât there. But she doesnât break them, not unless sheâs in extended contact with them. Her... âmagicâ is very hostile and essentially âshredsâ other magics, which makes them ineffective against her. That isnât to say sheâs immune to all magics, however.
If someone uses magic to make a portal, then the portal is there. Renfri can step through it. Granted, she should probably go through last, since thereâs a possibility that for weaker mages sheâll collapse the portal after her as her black hole-ness interacts with the magic, but she still Goes Through.
If someone tried to banish her specifically, as in cast magic on her, it wouldnât work.
Someone can summon up stone walls, and Renfri will be just as trapped as anyone else, because the magic was used on the earth. Not on her.Â
If the walls are very thin but magicâd to be indestructible or something, then Renfri can shred that magic if and only if sheâs in close contact with it for a while. Which means you can trap her temporarily, but eventually sheâll reach a point where she just reaches out and kicks through both your ward AND the wall
If itâs like. A ward that say, traps someone in a room? Or makes someone confused and turn around and leave? or straight up makes someone pass out when they enter a Forbidden Room or something? Yeah Renfri just sort of. Walks through those. Most âinvisibleâ effect wards just straight up donât effect her in the way theyâre supposed to.Â
But they donât fully break unless sheâs in contact with them. Itâs sort of like uhhhhh Renfri has the sun under her skin, and itâs snowing. When she gets any snowflake at all on her, it melts pretty much instantly. However, the people sheâs traveling with are still getting snowflakes on their eyelashes and itâs fucking up their vision.Â
But if theyâre in a room full of snow for a long enough time, Renfri melts any bits that come in contact with her. And given a long enough time, melts the whole room. If she just moved on though, the snow would still be there, if that makes sense?
Jaskier has to frequently re-enchant Renfriâs sword, because even though heâs not using magic on her just being in proximity for long periods of time shreds the magic. But at least it lasts for Some Time because if he tried to enchant Renfri herself, it just straight up wouldnât take
so if someone put every defense around them... it would depend on the defenses!! Renfri eats magic, but she doesnât have magic. She can be killed if sheâs tossed off a cliff or stabbed with a sword or if she gets caught in a rockslide.Â
Granted, that cliff doesnât have to have been there a second ago, the sword can have been summoned out of thin air, and magic could have been used to cause the rockslide. Sheâs not infallible! But many magic users will try and blast her up front, see that doesnât work, and panic. And while they panic, Renfri gets close enough to kill them.
Hey just wanted to say that two days ago I spent an entire day just reading to grow in adversity and itâs so amazing!! I love how well you switch between vouces and how well the different styles of writing merge, itâs amazing. Plus I love your yennefer!
sadfADSFGG thank you!!
have a little snippet of the next chapter -Â
âJaskier?â If Yennefer tries to sound not condescending, she isnât succeeding.
âHavenât you heard?â Renfri flips her dagger up and over in her hand, a trick that according to her brother made her look âbadassâ, âMusic soothes the savage beast.â
âRight. Youâre uninvited.â Yennefer immediately claims and Renfri snorts at her own sense of humor.
The silence between them is less tense, edging its way back towards the easy sort of equilibrium that they usually share.Â
Renfri breaks it, âDo you have a backup plan, or are you going to wrestle a dragon with your bare hands?â
Renfri is pretty sure that dragons fall into the category of âmagically resistantâ creatures in a bestiary. She could be wrong, but thatâs Yenneferâs problem now.Â
âI think Iâm going to seduce a knight.â Yennefer muses thoughtfully.
Renfri snorts in laughter, and Yennefer grins. Renfri smiles back and thinks, yeah. Theyâre going to be alright.
Something I love about TGIA is that it can flow with canon so perfectly. Even with things not yet in the Netflix series, you can just imagine how the characters would react. For example in one of the books, Jaskier gets kidnapped and grilled for info on Geralt and Ciri and putting on some TGIA glasses you can just imagine Renfri's reaction and Geralts remorse and just, so much. It's amazing and incredible and thank you for writing this
my absolute FAVORITE thing is making an au that could theoretically mesh with canon if given the chance!! I love looking at characters and picking apart their actions and motivations and words and just, I have so much fun justifying why a character chooses one way over another??
Which is who you get all the canon-addressing chapters with me basically exploring Jaskierâs motivations for his canon actions under the guise of the au and then from there can throw him in new situations and figure out how heâd act in those given the same rough thought map from before
the best part is boiling a character down to their essentials, figuring out what theyâre motivated by (tgia!Jaskier is a little bit petty, is used to hanging around with people way more powerful than him who have complex relationships with their own emotions, and is a feral little bastard man who will start a fight with anyone who dares insult his family/people he likes) and then tossing them into a situation
So in a kidnapped-and-grilled scenario you probably have a Jaskier who is making really sarcastic comments, telling his interrogator that his sister hits harder than that (because she does), spitting blood at the man before going into an apology speech because actually that shirt looks like itâs made with some pretty nice material? Way too nice to belong on this manâs chest, really.Â
(And then you have Jaskier yelping and being all âIâll tell you Iâll tell you!â and when the dude is like âokay tell me about geralt of riviaâ jaskier is just like âoh shit man i have so many songs lemme just - MY LOVE HAS EYES LIKE DRAGON SCALES, GOLDEN GLEAMING BRIGHT. YOU WOULD THINK ME TELLING TALES, OF HIS HAIR LIKE SNOW AT NIGHT - â
the interrogator is grudgingly impressed by the sheer number of love ballads that Jaskier has either composed or adapted to be about the Witcher which tell him literally nothing except like. the ways jaskier feels when geralt smiles or how his ass looked when he was killing a drowner in his tight leather pants
Interrogator, taking notes: iâm using that euphemism in every conversation i have from now on
Jaskier: oh you liked that one? I have so many more this is like, the most euphemism filled song iâve ever written. But i mean, come on, Geraltâs sword? Thatâs low hanging fruit
and then considering Jaskier has magic in this au that historically has been used to influence emotions (especially turning negative ones to positive) and the fact that heâs singing (which is how he uses his magic), he probably ends up being bros with the guy by the end of it and they go out drinking together and thatâs how Geralt and Renfri find him, standing on a table absolutely plastered singing âthe fishmongerâs daughterâ at top volume while his would-be-kidnapper enthusiastically applauds because heâs equally sloshed)
anyway that entire thing is basically how i turn any vaguely depressing prompt into a happy one because at the end of the day this is a happy fic full of found family and love and just,,,, i want them to be haPPY
