The alarm made you jump up like every Monday morning. There are quite a few customers on Mondays, and the café is usually very crowded. You expected the usual grumpy customers, especially veterans who have to go to work and mothers taking their kids to breakfast before school. As you got dressed, your eye fell on the calendar and saw that today's date was circled in red, and you smiled. Today was your and Pierrot's anniversary. You've been together for a year, and it's been since the circus has been in town. By now, people have gotten used to seeing the circus flyers circling the streets, and it cheers you up. And it was precisely when they arrived that you met Pierrot. You couldn't have known a sweeter person; for a non-human creature, he was a hundred times purer than a human, and that's exactly what made you fall in love with him. You couldn't wait to see him today, you were curious what he would come up with for your anniversary. Pierrot has always been the one to give you gifts, you always try to return the favor, but work takes up a lot of your time.
You grab what you need, and before leaving, you put on the pin Pierrot gave you when you met. You left the apartment and, as soon as you arrived, you immediately met Carol's gaze. She greets you, and together you start the day by opening the café. So much had happened in a year, and you were also talking about Carol. She had disappeared, everyone thought she had run away, only to find out later she was locked up in the circus tents. It wasn't an easy truth to swallow until Pierrot explained everything. It was a secret you had kept to yourselves, and in exchange, he made sure Carol was free. You didn't know how he did it, but one thing was certain: this conversation shouldn't have been discussed with Jester or the Ticker Taker.
"I see you smiling today, what happened?" Carol asks you, giving you an amused look.
"Is it that noticeable?" Your cheeks flush at the thought of your happiness being so visible. She nods.
"Girl, you look like a child waiting for the evening to open his Christmas present" she replies as she hands the customer an espresso. You, on the other hand, had just finished serving three tables.
"Miss, hurry up, I don't have all day!" The shrill voice of a lady in a foul mood catches your attention.
"Of course, sorry." Carol's expression tells you she's not thrilled with this customer's arrival. This lady was a regular who came to the café mainly for the pistachio croissant; she was crazy about it, but otherwise she does nothing but complain to you. You and Carol had already ignored her, believing that her lack of breaks was the reason for so much desperation in her life that she finds solace in the café to vent. As soon as she leaves, your mind starts screaming for mercy.
"Geez, I hope I don't grow old like that lady" Carol's remark makes you nod. You massage your temples and hope everything is fine. You look at your watch and barely an hour has passed.
“This is going to be a long day…” you commented.
"Mondays are always like this, you can't complain."
"Ugh," you exclaim. Carol pats you on the shoulder.
"Come on, don't be upset. Anyway can you now tell me why you were so happy before?" Her question makes you look up.
"Right! The thing is, today is—" the doorbell rings and a smiling green figure enters through the door.
"Good morning, my dear." Harlequin enters, interrupting your conversation. You glance behind him, seeing if Pierrot was with him. "I'm sorry to disappoint you, but your faithful puppy isn't here with me. What a shame" he emphasized the last word.
"Yeah...what a shame. The usual?" you sighed, he nodded. Carol was preparing his order with a bored expression; they weren't getting along. You took the opportunity to be alone with him. "Do you know where he is?" Harlequin smiled at your question.
"Straight to the point, aren't you interested in spending some time with me? Your dog will never find out, with me every secret can be kept." His attempts to flirt with you never stop, he never gives up if there's talk of annoying Pierrot.
"I'm serious, Harl, do you know what he's doing? Is he stopping by the café?" You wanted an answer. Maybe he forgot? Or is he feeling sick? You wanted to make the day special, but without him, it all seemed pointless.
Harlequin sighs curiously, he loves to see how you don't fall for his temptations, he says you were the only one who didn't crave him "The last time I saw him he was in his tent, he was definitely preparing something disgustingly romantic for you..."
"And I bet you didn't hesitate to make fun of him, did you?"
"You know me well, dear" You don't understand all this need to belittle him, after all, they didn't get along and you knew it, but it seemed a bit too much. "I mean, how could I not, I saw him so intent on writing on paper and coloring, he looked like a child, whatever gift it is for you, I don't think it's that exciting." His claws reach out to touch your hair. "If it were me, I would have given you a gift worthy of being appreciated and enjoyed" he hisses at the end.
"Your order" Carol interrupts sharply, passing Harlequin his iced latte. They both look at each other in silence, unsure if there was hatred or a vain attempt to kill each other. Harlequin pays but doesn't take his eyes off your colleague.
"So rude and cutting, young lady. It pains me to see that expression on that face..." he chuckles to himself, casting one last glance at you before returning to Carol, her expression doesn't change, the annoyance that Harlequin caused her was evident "...thank goodness I had the opportunity to see your pleased expression" he says before leaving. The silence fill the café.
"What did he mean?" Carol asks you. You shake your head.
"I have no idea" you say. Harlequin was a big puzzle and try to resolve it was a risky choice for your own virginity, so better not knowing. Other customers come in. The hours pass and still no sign of Pierrot. You were starting to worry; he was usually the first to come in, Harlequin was second, and occasionally the Ticket Taker or Jester visits, but nothing. You were happy with Harlequin's answer; he was preparing something for you, but not seeing him arrive worried you. You spent the whole time with your head in the clouds, a thousand scenarios and worries flooding your mind. Luckily, the customers were stopping arriving, and it was late in the afternoon. You couldn't take it anymore.
"Carol, listen, I have to get off work early" you couldn't take it anymore, your colleague was shocked by that sudden news.
"Well, yes, of course, but can I ask what's bothering you? You've been feeling uneasy ever since that green goblin came by." She puts her hands on her hips.
"It's just that today is Pierrot and I's anniversary! He usually comes to visit me in the morning, but today he didn't come and-"
"You can go" your colleague immediately stops you, adjusting her brown hair. "I'll handle this, you go see your clown." She smiles at you, din't make any questions, no bother, nothing else, you were free, and you didn't need to be told twice. You leave and head towards the circus. As soon as you see the Ticket Taker, your eyes light up.
"Oh, red ticket visitor, how nice—"
"Do you know where Pierrot is?" your question leaves him speechless.
"Visitor, are we in a hurry? Pierrot is busy right now but—"
"Did something happen? Can I see him?" The Ticket Taker looks slightly annoyed at the way you've interrupted him again.
"I don't think it's possible right now—" You couldn't wait. If something had happened to Pierrot, you wanted to know, you wanted to see him and make sure he wasn't hurt. You passed him and ran to his tent.
"Visitor!" you hear the Ticket Taker losing his temper. You see two fools from the pink tent chasing you, but you don't stop.
"Pierrot?" His tent was empty. You kept calling his name, but there was no response. You just hoped you weren't making a racket for nothing. You continued searching for him, trying to outrun the fools. He wasn't in his tent, so you decided to look elsewhere. But two of the fools caught you and stopped you. "Let me go!"
"Red ticket visitor, you are definitely the least respectful person I've seen so far" the Ticket Taker appears. "I think I'll talk to Pierrot and the Jester about this unusual behavior."
"What's all this noise?" Speaking of the devil. Jester arrives and is surprised when he sees you; this was your chance.
"The human insisted on entering without following the rules—" the Ticket Taker tries to speak.
"Where's Pierrot?" you exclaimed, catching Jester's attention. "I just want to know how he is and then I'll leave." The Jester's silence seemed like the beginning of a death sentence. You didn't know what was going through his mind and you were afraid to find out. What if kick you out? What if you weren't able to spend your day with Pierrot? It was your fault, you didn't wait...
"Let her go" he exclaims, and the fools holding you down let you go. The Ticket Taker is surprised, but doesn't object. "I admire your determination in finding Pierrot, human. I'll take you to him, but I hope something like this never happens in my circus again." You nodded, and Jester gestures to follow him. The fact that he spared you after only a few minutes was a blessing. Pierrot had told you that Jester was very strict, perhaps more so than the Ticket Taker, and that he never spares anyone. It must have been your lucky day.
You enter the Doctor's tent and there you see him, the Doctor busy treating him. Pierrot's gaze is downcast, almost distraught, but as soon as the Jester moves the tent and signals you to go forward, you waste no time.
"Pierrot!" your voice echoes, and the clown's eyes light up; he's surprised to see you. You hug him, and he holds you tight.
"What happened to you?" Your hands on his face, he was bleeding from the head, his clothes were covered in dust. Doctor and Jester leave you alone, and Pierrot stops his silent act.
“Ugh…nothing serious, my lady, don’t worry” she says shyly in a low voice.
"You are hurt...have they hurt you again?" He doesn't answer. His expression was melancholy, which was enough to make you understand that some assholes had bothered him. Pierrot was used to being picked and beaten; he doesn't have the courage to react and create a scene like the others.
"They ruined the gift I had prepared for you..." in one hand a destroyed bouquet of flowers "But I can go and buy it back for you, I have enough savings to afford it" he hugs you tightly and you shake your head.
"You don't have to, really, Pierrot." Your thumbs caress his cheeks and he seems to appreciate it. "I don't need you to buy me more flowers, just knowing you're okay is enough for me." You give him a light kiss on the cheek. He blushes.
“But…our anniversary, I…it was part of your gift” he stammers.
"We can fix this, Pierrot. Don't be discouraged. How about you stay over tonight? After this day, you'll definitely need a shower. We can also make dinner together, watch a movie, and...just spend time together. What do you say?" He stares at you for a while before quickly nodding, smiling. His bells ring, and that's enough to make you smile.
"I'd love to, my lady. I can't wait to spend more time with you" he seemed thrilled at the idea. You gave him another kiss on the cheek, and he didn't stop holding you.
You stayed with Pierrot until he gave his show. You stayed until Doctor helped him heal, and you even stayed to watch his performance. Two assistants were surrounded by flames (presumably artificial) as Pierrot hurled his blades at them, missing once, twice. They huddled together until they were both hit in the head. It's a good thing it's all fake, otherwise you might have felt sick.
Once you've emerged from his tent, he doesn't hesitate to join you. You hug him and from his hand, a letter slips out, sealed in an envelope. The envelope was colorful and decorated with little stars; it was adorable, and you decide to open it, Pierrot watching you curiously. It was a poem he had written:
"I’m all alone, or so I used to believe,
In a world of ash where there’s no reprieve.
The end of progress, a violent decay,
Where death and shadows lead the way.
solitude was a hunger, a hollow inside,
until I saw you—nowhere left to hide.
I didn't seek you, I didn't even try,
but now my heart beats for every breath you sigh.
Two bodies, two souls, in a land of fire,
Bound by a knot, a desperate desire.
You’re the only touch that I crave to feel,
The only thing left that is hauntingly real.
Take my breath before the world takes its toll,
Make my death a wonder, a gift for my soul.
I want to feel your spark, every shiver and glow,
While the chaos consumes everything below.
They pray and they scream as the shadows descend,
But with you by my side, I don't need it to end.
Hold me tight, choke me, draw me near,
Our blood flows together, silencing the fear.
No words are needed, the world envies our grace.
A sacred love in this desolate place.
We are the last ones, the final debris,
Let’s act like it now, wild and free.
Not plain, not boring, let’s scream and let’s sweat,
Unleash every instinct we haven’t used yet.
As long as it’s us, no sin is forbidden,
In this dying world, our secrets aren't hidden.
The sky is falling, there’s nowhere to go,
But your arms are the safest place that I know.
Stay with me, darling, don't ever depart,
The end of the world is a work of our art.
Through flames and through ruins, through kisses and tears,
I’ll stay in your shadow for the rest of our years."
You were speechless. That's what Harlequin meant by "disgustingly romantic". You didn't think Pierrot could be so poetic. A poem with such destructive and romantic vibes, something dark yet extremely pure and sincere. For someone who's in a circus of horrors, you weren't surprised. No one had ever dedicated anything like this to you; you were truly happy and your cheeks were red.
"Pierrot this is so gorgeous!" you exclaimed, and he smiled happily at your response. Then a bang, fireworks paint the night sky. Beautiful and colorful, you look at Pierrot.
"Is this your gift?" he nods. This man never ceased to amaze you.
“My performance was for you too” he whispers, and now you realize how the poem and his performance from earlier coincide.
"Aw!" You lunge at him and kiss him without hesitation. He picks you up, and fireworks go off in the background. You couldn't have asked for a better partner.
Jester watches the couple from his tent and the figure of Ticket Taker behind him catches his attention.
"I wonder why you spared that human. It's not from you to spare humans who break the rules." Hands behind his back, standing erect, and keeping an eye on the leader.
Jester closes the curtain and confronts the Ticket Taker. "You're right, it's not usual from me" He approaches. "But, I admit, I've never seen a human so determined to care about a monster's health."
"It's for Pierrot, isn't it?" Jester finds herself nodding.
“I don’t know what he saw in that human, but whatever it is, it’s different from anything we’ve ever dealt with” Jester observes.
"You don't think this is really love, do you?" he ventures, adjusting his mask.
Jester doesn't respond initially, reopens the curtain and sees the couple happily walking away "Who knows..."
