Raw energon is a metamorphic rock.
I can explain. Metamorphic rocks are formed when a protolith (base rock which is either sedimentary or igneous) is subjected to immense pressure and/or heat. The g1 cartoon had a depiction of liquid energon being formed by compressing different forms of energy. (Weird cartoon logic where you can do that to oil and electricity if it's in a special box). Other cartoons show a more solid crystal like energon instead. I believe shifting tectonic plates (in a universe with transformers) can cause lingering energy in a planetary body to crystallize. I headcanon it's more potent than an artificially created liquid energon once it's refined because of the energy actually used. Probably the reason they do that in Beast Wars, the Unicron Trilogy, Aligned etc.
I think there's an argument for igneous energon but I think that would go into Primus's blood territory and would be hard to explain off of Cybertron.
Animated's trees are just... very different. But the crystals were meant to show up so whatever.
Um, go check stuff for yourself and don't take this at face value, just like anything in the Internet. I think it's fun to try and apply real world science to fiction even if it might not make sense.

Transformers Cybertron Starscream x Vector Prime Please and thank you?
Starscream corrupts Vector Prime to his side via romance. He didn’t really think it would work- nor did he think he would find himself falling for the old mech.
Sparring with swords together.
Neither Vector Prime nor Starscream are quite sure how to live. Neither of them really have any desire to learn, either. Unfortunately they are about to be forced to do so together.
Megatron and Starscream, Cybertron edition-
Just two petty and bitchy gossip queen doin’ their thing uvu

My absolute favorite Megatron--the crankiest of seagulls. Definitely a fun one to work on, despite it not being in my request queue. Oh well, I’m still happy. <3
Soundwaves Rated by their Gremlin Factor
G1
> Very clever gremlin, always getting into places he shouldn’t. > Finds the juiciest scoops for Decepticons to go to town and cause chaos on. > If he can get inside an Autobot without them knowing, who could stop him? > Houses smaller gremlins inside him.
Final score: 10/10
UT
> Had all the tools of the gremlin trade, but barely did anything of any note with them. > Flew in between Megatron and Starscream’s final battle and honestly expected something good to come out of it, we all thought you were better than that, Soundwave. > Sideways was carrying their gremlin team, let’s be honest here.
Final score: 2/10
Bayverse
> His kids did all the work for him. > Could have caused unsurmountable chaos while he was a satellite but didn’t. > His few gremlin acts committed in person were small scale and for his own selfish perversions, he is looked down upon by the community.
Final score: 4/10
TFA
> Top tier gremlin, caused citywide chaos numerous times. > Convinced Optimus that his humansona would have tiny lips, the absolute madman. > Does not house smaller gremlins inside him but has many external gremlins, one turns into a guitar.
Final score: 100/10
TFP/RiD
> Had the perfect gremlin look. > Does not seek out acts of chaos, craves order and the familiar. > Abhors his gremlin nature, eventually changed his frame to reflect this. > Did gain many external gremlins but the damage is already done.
Final score: 5/10
