Aka I am having many many thoughts about her and her characterization and the way BW handles her and gosh. she's so good. She's such a breath of fresh air when it comes to female characters. Femme fatale self-described bad girl who kicks ass and is in it for her own personal gain. Just so happens "her own personal gain" involves wanting to be loved and accepted for who she is and not forced into the service of the men around her. Wanting to show her compassionate side without being demeaned for being "womanly." She's powerful and her spider legs turn into a goddamn armada of assault rifles and she's got a science background that both Maximals and Predacons rely on at multiple points in the show. She has a romance that highlights even more things about her character, and doesn't just turn her into an object for the plot. She flirts with everybody, either as a tactic or i guess just cause she can. But she genuinely loves Silverbolt and decided that he was worth switching sides for, and that he was trustworthy enough to call for help when she needed it. Her femininity is something that constantly comes up as a point of contention because so many characters (LOOKING AT YOU TARANTULAS YOU ASSHOLE) view her as an object to be won and controlled, and yk usually in a 90's show like this with a 90% male cast that's how the writers would treat her. But she's 100% aware of this and often uses their attitude towards her to her advantage, all while the show tells us that she's doing that cause she's smart, not because she needs BiG StROnG mAn to do all her dirty work for her. (Sometimes literally. Case in point: that one scene with Quickstrike). She's written dealing with the misogyny from her coworkers and allies all while she also deals with her own inner struggles and THE WAR. She's come from a life where she never had any choices and she is going to make those choices for herself now, Megatron's bitchass be damned. And like I said, she does so all while being a femme fatale who flirts with everybody and canonically has a thing for himbos. She's a complete and total person who is very much so written *specifically* as a woman. A woman with real feelings and struggles and strengths and flaws and a complicated relationship with her gender and how others perceive her for it. That's really cool! She's a person!!!! Like, a real actual person!! And this is a Transformers show from the late nineties with animation that looks like it was rendered on a potato battery! I feel like the bar is in hell for so many female characters, especially those whose gender and sexuality are pretty significant parts of them. But man. Blackarachnia really takes the cake when it comes to Well Written Women.
