Hi, Koby! I'd love to hear your thoughts on the parrotfish, if you have the time and don't mind?
-a very interested fish anon
HIII HIII !!!
I’ll assume you mean Scarus frenatus, The Parrotfish, and not the Parrot Chichlid, which can also be described as a ‘parrot fish’.
My thoughts? THIS FISH RULES!!
These are all Parrotfish of different types, there are about 90 species of Parrotfish and they are all awesome!!
They use their ‘beak’ hence the name, though it’s actually just a bunch of small teeth closely packed together! to scrape micro-algae off of coral! When coral gets bleached due to rising ocean temperatures, they’re one of the only reef dwelling fish that stick around, and that’s because bleached coral are easy for micro-algae to colonize, creating a nutritious layer of ‘scunge’ for the Parrot fish to feed on, which in turn gives the coral reefs they call home a better chance at recovery.
These amazing, beautiful fish are on the front lines of saving their equally beautiful homes, so remember to wear reef safe sunscreen and more importantly, to raise awareness about global warming!
