Virginia surgeon John Horace Stevens (1824-1881) married Alabaman Mary Ann Armstrong (1843-1916) on January 26, 1869 in Vienna, Louisiana and the couple relocated to Dallas the following year. Dr. and Mrs. Stevens acquired acreage and a farmhouse west of town in what later became Oak Cliff.
