Part 2 of The Outsiders colour symbolism: the Socs

In the musical, there are a lot of characters that didn't appear in the book or the movie, and remembering them all can be confusing and remembering their roles can be confusing too. Luckily, every soc wears a different colour, so let's see what their costumes' can tell us about them.
Bob Sheldon- Lilac
The Socs almost wear a uniform. Their hair is slicked back, they wear either tan or white pants with white sneakers, their yellow and green letterman, their shirts and their green class rings. His colour is lilac, a very soft, innocent looking colour, just like how the adults in his life see him (or want to see him). He clashes' with Cherry's pink (unlike how Pony compliments her), showing the rough patch they hit in their relationship, her falling out and then breaking up with him.
Paul Holden- Yellow
Paul's yellow is clearly due to his relationship with two very important characters: Bob, since yellow and purple are complimentary, and Darry, because they are adjacent on the colour wheel and green and yellow always come back in their football/school equipment (the jackets, the class rings). As a colour, yellow also fits very nicely every other socs' colour, showing his support in his friends as well as his complicity and eventually how he sort of becomes their leader instead of Bob (Justice for Tulsa and the rumble).
Let's take a break to understand something! Because a majority of the socs are supporting characters, when swings/understudies play them, it's possible their outfit change colours! As I understand it, each actor has their own costume and unless they're playing a major character (Cherry, Bob or Paul), they will wear their own costume. So, let's get back to it.
RJ Higton's Chet Baker- Orange, Cole Zieser's Terrence Dipp (Trip)- Blue, Barton Cowperthwaite's Clark Brillstein (Brill)- Green
There isn't a lot to say about the Soc boy's colours. Most of the time they will wear plaid shirts, but their outfits vary. For the rumble, the actress playing the Soc girls will also dress in boy clothes to participate in the fight. The only thing of substance I can add is that the boys have their girl counterparts as well as their greaser counterparts, but I don't think it says a lot about their personality.
Cherry Valance- Pink
For the majority of the musical, Cherry wears a pink and white dress in a dogtooth pattern. It shows her relationship to Pony and how similar they are in philosophy. Despite her neatly ironed clean white dress, she shares Pony's red, and both of them are outsiders in their friend groups (there are no pink or red soc boy to match her). I also noticed her collar is white while her dress is pink while Pony's collar is red while his shirt is white. Her being pink also clashes with Bob's purple, indicating she's done with him. But towards the end, she changes outfit, and I'm pretty sure she's the only one that changes besides putting on or taking off a jacket. Her new outfit is very muted and much less bright, as well as less pink and more... lilac? She's wearing purple, Bob's colour. After his death, she's grieving her, which is why her colours dimmed, but she also sees herself as his girlfriend instead of her ex-girlfriend (she possibly had intentions of taking him back, or this is just regret speaking).
Saragrace Mariani's Marcia- Green
Marcia's boyfriend is usually Trip. Their colours mix together and his blue prevents her green from shining through, while when she's next to Two-Bit's pink, they both shine and compliment each other, since green and red are opposites.
Melody Rose's Beverly Jitney Bush- Light Blue
Bev is a soft pastel blue that fits perfectly with the two other soc girls, like the powerpuff girls. Despite her being blue and her boyfriend, Brill, being green, she isn't in the same situation as Marcia. Her dress is more faded than the other girls, showing she probably isn't as confident in herself and less willing to express herself. She doesn't talk to greasers like Cherry and Marcia and even pulls Marcia away from Cherry in Justice for Tulsa, showing how she wants to stay in the status quo she lives in and doesn't want to confront the other Socs like Cherry does. But don't mistake her lack of self-esteem for kindness. Just like Bob, she's dressed in pastel to appear nicer, kinder, but she's the one that burns Two-Bit and she's the one glaring at the greasers all throughout the musical.
This is all for the musical (no I didn't forget Ace, I purposely left her out. They don't have a colour) but I'm not done with The Outsiders characters! I also picked out colours for the greaser girls and for everyone that doesn't know, I made a bunch of ocs and fankids that also have their assigned colours. I think that's gonna be the next part.
