Just. Augh. Never mind unmasking, the mask doesn't even exist for Ryuk. Light flops, sulks, pouts, rants, lounges around, full-on crashes out - all those embarrassing flawed human things that with everyone else he holds in at any cost until he nearly explodes. But Ryuk is allowed to see every bit of it and even gets away with commenting on it sometimes... just gods the vulnerability the trust the complete disregard for the fact that this is a literal death god he's showing all this desperately mortal weakness to??? I am chewing on the bars of my enclosure about this, seriously.

oh god oh no i really like this idea… light dropping the notebook so he has an excuse to leave the shinigami realm and do his schemes in the human world… ryuk picking it up and laughing about the prank and trying one as a joke but oh no it actually works! ryuk (desperately bored with the world but pessimistically unimaginative) is like alright i guess i’ll start killing people i don’t like, using a variety of methods to not get caught. light is like come the fuck on i thought humans were creative

just the mundane adventures of ryuk the human while light trails behind him in frustration because he’s not allowed to tell humans too much but ohhh my goddddd he’s not DOING anything INTERESTING. tries emotionally manipulating ryuk but ryuk caves as soon as light tells him he can pass through walls to steal shitty beer (“apples to me are like cigarettes and alcohol to you humans,” canon). ryuk shows him human food like apples and light is like [takes one bite] oh this is great i could get the rest of the shinigami hooked on this and let it make its way to the shinigami king and then i'll have him in the palm of my hand as long as i get the apple supply chain into control—

But it’s almost like he’s possessive of Light’s life. Ryuk possessed him and accompanied him, and this literally prevented other Shinigami from taking Light’s life (as per the rules); he unwittingly became Light’s bodyguard against the other Shinigami, and Light had no idea.

Light was the only human Ryuk ever saw up close, the one he was so close to and who became part of his life. The other humans Ryuk killed were just numbers; Light was... like the prey he was guarding. And Ryuk wrote his name in his note, only he could do that.

And when Ryuk took Light’s remaining years of life for himself, it was as if he were swallowing his life, sharing Light’s remaining years. Now he was living Light’s life, living years he only had because Light existed, and for a few years, they became one.
