      “so ----- ” he gives her a pointed look as if she should know what he’s talking about from a single syllable. “what are you getting me for christmas, nerd?”

                 “go where, what happened?” he asks, immediately awake and alert, looking everywhere for any possible sign of danger.

               “you make an amazing breakfast, mom, of course i have eaten!” he replies, cheerful. “and it’ll be just a couple of hours, alright? i’ll be back by dawn after what i can feel will be a very productive fishing day, so you don’t have to worry about me, okay?” lucas puts his hands on teresa’s cheeks, smiling at her before bowing down to peck at her forehead. “i’ll be extra careful there, so you gotta promise me you will also be very, very careful here while i’m gone. take care, okay? i will be back before you can even begin to miss me.”

          though katie rolls her eyes, there’s still a not-so-subtle smile on her face. “’s just a halloween party, mum -- nothing for you to worry about! we’ll go over to josh’s place, we’ll listen to some tunes, vote for the best costume, dance a little, and we’ll be done,” she explains with a shrug. “and you know toby’s gonna be with me all the time, so... really, how bad can i behave?” and though she really doesn’t meant to do anything wrong, the small smirk on her lips wants to tell a different story. “oh, by the way, i may crash a toby’s after the party -- says he’ll make me hot cocoa and we can have candy, so... see ya in the morning?” without waiting for an answer, katie just throws herself at her mother, wrapping her arms around her in a tight, warm hug. “you and ruby have a good night, ‘kay? maybe -- try and chat with newt? just enjoy yourself mum. you deserve it.”
