This took a long time for two reasons. First, I'm not terribly fast at drawing vehicles. Second, I had to wait for my new computer to arrive before I could finish it!

Extremely important head canon I thought of a few days ago: in the aftermath of the war, Aang makes Teo the head Air Acolyte at the Northern Air Temple, bc he has the spirit of an Airbender and cares about the temple's origins. I am a genius for this this is canon to me now
I was commissioned by @lyndexv to write about Lian, from the first ATLA game released back in the 2000s. I know this took me a while, but it was a delight to work on and figure out where she could fit into canon after the events of the game.
also available on AO3
Lian sighs as she arrives at the Northern Air Temple. Itâd taken her some time to figure out what she wanted from the rest of her life. Itâs clear now â her machines arenât the future, not without some significant improvements. And whether she likes it or not, bending is here to stay. So long as benders continue ruling, benders will continue to hold power.
At any rate, sheâd heard once that there was a Mechanist running a small settlement here. It seems like a place sheâll be able to find some kind of belonging.
And when she arrives, she sees â the place has been modified a fair bit to support anyone who isnât an Air Nomad. Oh, sheâs sure the Avatar wouldâve hated this, considering how he saw the way she treated the smaller temple. But she canât bring herself to be gleeful or despondent at the prospect. It just is.
She climbs up into the temple, where sheâs greeted by someone maybe a couple years younger than her.
âHey there! You new around here?â he asks.
âI just arrived,â she says. âIâŚheard some rumors about this temple. I heard of a small group living here led by a mechanic.â
âOh, the Mechanist? Yeah, he runs this place,â the boy answers. âAnd youâre definitely not Fire Nation, right?â
âOf course not!â she snaps. âI was captured by them once. I donât wish to replicate the experience.â
ItâsâŚnot the whole truth. But itâs mostly true. She doesnât really want to be captured by the Fire Nation. But she does miss having access to any tool she could ever ask for and as many materials as she wanted without having to be concerned about scarcity.
âOh. Iâm sorry.â He scurries off. Serves him right for making assumptions.
Then againâŚitâs not as though she can truly blame him for his paranoia. At a time like this, one infiltrator from the Fire Nation could bring the whole temple down.
She shudders. A place like this shouldnât be brought down.
On her way further into the temple to establish herself, she nearly bumps to a boy in a wheelchair.
âOh! Hello there,â he says. âYou new around here?â
She nods tersely.
âWe donât get new people super often. Probably for the best,â he says. âNameâs Teo. Whatâs yours?â
âIâm Lian,â she says.
He offers his hand for a handshake. She takes it.
âWhy here?â he asks.
âI heard some rumors about a mechanic that lives here. IâŚwas a bit of a prodigy in that field, so I was curious. My home was destroyed recently. I thought here would be no better than anywhere else.â
âOh. Iâm sorry that happened,â he says. She leaves out the part where sheâd been the one doing the destroying. âWell, if youâre looking for him, thatâs my dad. I can take you back up to meet him, if you want?â
âIâŚthat would be rather nice, if it doesnât trouble you.â
âItâs no problem at all,â he says, rolling his way back up. âGetting around here is a breeze. Literally, sometimes.â
As he says that, someone soars above them from a glider.
âHe built those based on the airbender ones we found,â Teo explains. âItâs designed so that anyone can fly around on them. Even someone like me. I have one in my chair.â
Lian studies his chair now with a closer eye. Itâs very well-made â in good condition, despite how frequently it must be used. She wonders where the mechanisms for the glider would be hidden â where she might consider hiding them, if she were building something like it.
âFascinating,â she answers.
âItâs pretty cool, yeah,â he responds sheepishly. âI could show you sometime?â
She considers the offer. So far, his company hasnât been the worst she could ask for, and he seems to at the very least understand what heâs talking about, even if he doesnât share his fatherâs interests to the same degree.
âAfter I get settled in,â she settles on responding.
***
Settling in doesnât take her too long. Even as a newcomer to the community, they welcome her with open arms. None of them know what she did, but she doesnât think sheâd be rejected on that basis anymore.
And, most critically, the Mechanist has decided to mentor her. Itâs a win-win â he needs some hands helping with maintenance of all the machines around the temple, and she gets critical tutelage for the future.
âI heard you were captured by the Fire Nation,â he says one day, while they tune up one of the steam engines heating the temple. âI empathize deeply. I had no choice but to work with them once. It was either them or the safety of this community.â
âAt first they were forcing me. But thenâŚas I was developing the machines for themâŚI realized they could be used against the Fire Nation just as much with them. And thatâs exactly what I tried to do.â She sets her wrench down. âIt resulted in quite a bit of unintended collateral damage. Plants will recover. Iâm not as certain about the people.â
âIt is just as important to think about the environment when building any invention,â the Mechanist intones. âWhat did you build?â
âI designed machines meant to replace benders,â she admits. âEven one in the hopes of recreating the Avatar, but that one required benders from the other elements to work. Itâs simple enough to build a machine that can spray out fire or jets of air. But the issue comes with the other elements.â
âI see.â He tilts his head, considering it. âPerhaps we can tackle the problem in some other regard. I can see how that would be incredibly useful, both against and for the Fire Nation. It would also keep important soldiers off the front linesâŚâ
Alongside, rather than against. She wonders if it could really work.
âIâd given up on the idea,â she admits. âIâŚhad a confrontation that forced me to flee. Itâs how I truly ended up here.â
âLian, if we punished everyone who screwed up, Iâd long since be an exile,â he says, offering her a smile. âYouâve done a lot of good for this community since you came here.â
She smiles. Sheâs always just wanted to do right by people, in the end.
***
And then the news reaches them.
The Avatar is dead. The Earth Kingdom has fallen.
Despite everything, Lian doesnât know how to feel. She has mixed feelings on the Avatar, but to a lot of people, he represents hope. And those people just had all their hopes dashed in a single blow.
The Earth Kingdom is a bigger loss. The Fire Nation at this point has practically won the war â aside from some holdouts like them. It puts them in even more danger.
Lian knows theyâre going to have to find some way to defend themselves. And sheâs prepared to fight for her new home. Whatever it takes.
***
The next few months are filled with uneasy tension.
âYou made a prototype version of these before you came here, right?â Teo asks, rolling up next to her as she works on Machine 2.0.
âI did,â she answers. âBut the materials we have here are better. I didnât realize the harm I was doingâŚâ
Until it was too late.
But itâs not too late now. She can still do what she wanted all along â and this time, she wonât be hurting anyone by doing it.
âYou have improved as a mechanic, havenât you?â he challenges.
âOf course I have,â she bites back. âYour father has been instrumental in that process.â She doesnât even know where to begin expressing how grateful she is that she came here after everything. For the progress sheâs made since she was building her machine alone on that secluded island, both as a person and as a mechanic. âI know better now. Back then, I was angry at everyone. But getting angry at all benders doesnât help at a time like this. We have bigger problems.â
She canât work towards her goal of making the world a world for everyone regardless of âmagic powersâ if everyoneâs being suppressed by the Fire Nation. She hasnât given up her distaste for bending, but sheâs accepted sheâll have to work with benders in order for there to be peace in the war against the Fire Nation. In her case, sheâs not going to gain ground on her own. Movements are built one person at a time, one seed at a time. And who knowsâŚmaybe in the future, when they do get to establish what the world will look like after the Fire Nationâs conquest has easedâŚsheâll be able to make a difference.
âWell, hey, they say âthe enemy of my enemy is my friendâ for a reason, right?â he asks.
She nods. But as she turns back to her work, he interrupts her.
âSpeaking of, as a matter of factâŚwe received a messenger hawk from a friend of the Avatarâs,â Teo says. âApparently, theyâre planning an invasion of the Fire Nationâs capital. On the day of the eclipse coming soon.â
âAnâŚeclipse?â She frowns.
âApparently, during an eclipse, firebenders lose their abilities entirely,â he explains. âAnd the Avatar is alive. In the initiative, the goal will be to get the Avatar to the Fire Lord. What happens next will be up to the Avatar.â
Lian frowns. âHe doesnât have the spine to do what it takes.â
âIt doesnât matter. An invasion like this will still destabilize the Fire NationâŚat least thatâs the thought process. And weâre attacking at their most vulnerable. Dad has already agreed to help them, but I wanted to talk to you. Because youâre my friendâŚand unlike everyone else, you didnât really seem as sad when the news came out that the Avatar died.â
âYou already know most of it,â she admits. âHe represents what I donât like most in this world. I canât deny his power as a symbol of hope, though. So in that senseâŚIâm glad he is alive, because it means everyone will stop capitulating to the Fire Nation.â
âHeâs not such a bad guy, you know.â Teo smiles. âSoâŚwhat do you think about all this?â
âIâll help with the preparations with the invasion,â Lian says. âIn order to take down the Fire Nation. What you said is accurate. I must put my grudges against them aside. Every moment the Fire Nation maintains its rule, we are in danger. If this eclipse plan has even a chance of workingâŚtheyâre going to need what weâre working on to bolster the numbers.â
âWeâre coordinating with the Avatarâs team and some of their allies, at least.â Teo looks down. âI donât know much about battle tactics or anything, butâŚthe Fire Nation is going to be at a disadvantage without their bending.â
âServes them right for relying on it,â she mutters.
âIt works to our advantage that they do. And heyâŚif these really are effectiveâŚâ
âI promise. They will be.â
(If she could see herself, sheâd notice a determined gleam in her eyes â a new fire lit that hadnât been there since well before she came to the temple.)
She takes a deep breath. âHow long until the eclipse?â
âNot long,â he says. âIf you need help, weâre all going to be helping Dad prepare too. And between all of us, I believe we can pull this off.â
***
And apparently, Sokka from the Avatarâs team had left them some blueprints as well. She finds the suggestions interesting, even though some aspects areâŚa little difficult to comprehend. Like the entire drawing.
Boarding the Water Tribe ship, Lian prepares to reintroduce herself to the group. Together, theyâve loaded everything on board the ship, including her own new and improved machines.
âLian?!â
ItâsâŚthe earthbender that was with them. What was his name again? She doesnât remember.
âSurprise,â she says dryly. âWe donât have time to explore what happened. Iâm here to help. I know how it looks. But Iâve brought my inventions back â to help us this time. And alongside what youâve devisedâŚI believe we can succeed in this infiltration.â
She leaves no room for argument. None of them bother.
âUm, who is this chick?â one of them asks. Someone from the Earth Kingdom, though Lian canât tell too much more about her.
âWeâll tell you about it later,â Sokka says. âWe donât have time right now. Right now, we need toâŚbrief everyone on the invasion plan. Now that weâve got everyone off the ships.â
***
It goes well at first. The submarines work like a charm â surprisingly, the addition of waterbending hadnât ruined it all. Lian has ready a brand new version of the Ultimaton â one that doesnât exploit other benders to use it, but works on its own power. Itâd been difficult to get the terraforming functions working, but with the Mechanistâs help, sheâd managed to get it done.
Now sheâs going to be on the front lines of an invasion. Alongside the rest of their small platoon. Even though theyâre bombarded, Lian has faith theyâll make it in â working alongside the earthbenders and waterbenders to get in, and spraying jets of fire and air.
AndâŚthe tanks they built are holding up really well too. She takes a deep breath.
Itâs more important to protect the Avatar right now. The goal is still get the Avatar up to the palace. Lian keeps an eye on things as they advance, but itâs hard to do much from the ground. Her ranged attacks only go so far â and theyâre being bombarded from every direction in the sky.
But it looks like the team on that sky bison have their backs. Soon enough, all the battlements are taken out.
The chaos is expected from war. She stays back to cover their behinds â sheâs going to move slower than the others, she knows. Itâs not going to be as fast for her as it is for some of the others.
And when Sokka takes command, she listens, lining up alongside the tanks.
She spots the Avatar gliding for the palace. Soon, the eclipse will strike, and the firebending soldiers will be rendered powerless.
Soon.
Appa takes off towards the volcano. Lian looks up at it.
Not much longer now.
For a moment, when the moon covers the sunâŚit feels glorious. With the eclipse glasses onâŚshe can see when the exact alignment begins.
The invasion ends with failure, but it still mattered in the end that they were there. That she was there. When the time came, she chose to help.
Okay so I return to this site to bless you all with this knowledge:
I was writing for a fic recently and I realized something about Zuko and Teo.
They had canonically met before the Western Air Temple episodes.
Think about it - Teoâs dad says theyâve been at the Northern Air Temple since Teo was too young to remember, right? So what, at least a decade ago?
And directly after his banishment three years ago, which angry Emo Fire Boy was going around to all four of the Air Temples to search for the Avatar??
Yep. Zuko.
Zuko wouldâve undoubtedly run in to the settlement at the Northern Air Temple, furious at the world and demanding that these refugees give up an Avatar that they didnât have.
Serious missed opportunity for some Teo sass toward Zuko if they had actually let them interact on screen and address thisđđ
*
Teo: *Makes his way back to the Gaang after exploring the temple with Haru and The Duke* Hey guys, whatâs up?
Aang: We found a firebending teacher for me!
Teo: Oh, sweet! Who?
Zuko: *Walks into Teoâs line of sight* That would be me.
Teo: *Gasps* Y O U! Youâre the jerk Fire Prince that showed up at the Northern Air Temple three years ago demanding that we give up the Avatar! You were such an asshole about it too!
Zuko: Right. Sorry about that. Uh, nice to see you again??

Thinking about Harmonic Convergence and how Teo could theoretically still be alive by that point. He's a little younger than Katara who's still alive. And anyway it's never really explained how it was determined so I like to think it's like. A "spirit of an airbender" type deal. And if anyone fits that bill it's Teo. Anyway, what I'm saying is Teo should be a post Harmonic Convergence Airbender in his old age
