Hari 5. Temple of Artemis. 🏛 #turkey🇹🇷 #turki2018   #lunajalanjalan #jalanjalanhemat  #jalanjalanturki #liburanturki  #budgettravel #travelbudget   #exploreturki #turkeytrip  #tripturki  #visitturkey #selcuk  #efes  #ephesus  #turkey #templeofartemis #ancientruins . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #365giftstomyself Gift #240 #blueknitwear #240down #125togo (at Temple of Artemis) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtU3L5ClfMW/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=34mnwz0gnkk
The Night One of the Seven Wonders Went Up in Flames
On July 21, 356 BC, the magnificent Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, was deliberately destroyed in an act of arson. The man responsible, Herostratus, confessed that he had burned the temple simply to ensure his name would be remembered forever. In response, the authorities executed him and attempted to erase his name from history by forbidding anyone from recording it—a punishment known today as damnatio memoriae. Ironically, historians preserved his story, giving him the notoriety he sought.
The temple, dedicated to the goddess Artemis, was famous for its immense size, gleaming marble columns, and extraordinary artwork. Although the destruction was devastating, the people of Ephesus rebuilt the sanctuary on an even grander scale. The rebuilt temple stood for centuries before it was ultimately destroyed during the late Roman period.
Did you know that there are Greek and Roman ruins in Turkey? I feel like you see a lot of posts about Istanbul and Cappadocia, but there are some other really awesome spots to explore in a Turkey such as Ephesus. • Ephesus began during the Greek times and flourished later on after the Romans took over. It contains one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world, the Temple of Artemis, and the Library of Celsus, one of the only remaining examples of a Roman Library. • When I graduated with my masters degree, my mom and I went on 6 week trip throughout Europe. This time we mostly explored the Mediterranean area. During this time I got to explore some unique places such as Ephesus. What are some unique places that you enjoyed? . . . #visitephesus #ephesusturkey #visitturkey #turkeygram #templeofartemis #libraryofcelsus #istanbulturkey #ephesusruins #roamfromhome #virtualtravel #travelwhensafe #socialdistancing #travelingteacher #teacherlife #teachergram #teachersofinstagram #wanderingwomen #girlsvsglobe #girldiscoverers #gltlove #globe_travel #ladieslovetravel #globelletravel #girlmeetsglobe #darlingescapes #sheisnotlost #girltribe #traveldreamseekers #realtravelseekers #traveltribe (at Ephesús, Kusadasi) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAN8TVWAZMo/?igshid=vk4y7hgdkp9n
