Volcano in moonlight and by sunrise

The glow of the Earth’s heat

This image was taken on the rim of Telica volcano in the Central American nation of Nicaragua, in February of 2012. It’s a slightly long exposure in order to capture both the glow from above and the glow from below.

The glow above is partially from the stars in the sky and partially light from nearby communities reflecting off the clouds. The deep red light is from magma within the cone of the volcano.

The volcano is a composite or stratovolcano, made of a mixture of a variety of lava types and ash. It sits above the subduction zone on the western coast of Central America, where the Cocos plate (a fragment of the old Farallon plate) is subducting into the mantle beneath the continent.

The volcano is one of the most active in the area, erupting regularly every few years or even more often. Most recently a large explosion at the crater in September of 2013; no one was hurt in that blast.There are fumaroles and mudpots nearby which are regularly visited by tourists.
