What would have been the great #HoraceSilver 93rd birthday today, I am celebrating by listening to some of his classics that are in my collection. “The Stylings of Silver” was recorded on May 8, 1957 at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey featuring Silver on piano, #ArtFarmer on trumpet, #HankMobley on tenor, #LouisHayes on drums and #TeddyKotick on bass. This is a #MusicMattersJazz reissue cut from the original analog tapes mastered by the legendary #KevinGrey. All tunes were written by Horace except for “My One and Only Love”. In this session it shows how much Horace had grown as a writer, partly because he’s innocent of complacency. As he states, “I try to write in a lot of different grooves. I wrote a waltz for instance, that I’d like to do in the future as a piano solo. I get a kick out of doing different things, working in different veins. Another thing I’d like to do is really get down some more with some of the Latin beats like the samba. The album starts of with the up tempo “No Smokin’” that Horace describes as “a kind of up tempo minor piece that gives everybody a chance to stretch out. There are also some written interludes. I’d had the title in mind for quite a while. ‘Smoke’in slang means to cook, to wail. So that what it means.” The rest of the album is “Smoke’in” as well as the Farmer – Mobley combo was what intrigued me the most when I purchased this album many years ago. This Music Matters Jazz reissue doesn’t disappoint. If you don’t have this in your collection I advise you to grab one if you see it.
