I have repelled down 100 feet on a mountain!
Multiple times ;)
My inner spider woman
After work today I went climbing at an indoor gym called "Hard Rock", located north of the CBD. Hard Rock is encased in a wall of glass through which pedestrians can watch completely insane people scale 25 m climbing walls in a single bound.Â
You have to have a partner to climb, and so I...roped...Mike into joining me. There's nothing like inviting a coworker, especially one you like, out for a recreational activity that, if you mess up, will basically kill him. But Mike is very cool, and keen to give it a go, as they say Down Under.Â
There was a mix up, and I arrived about an hour late, and we spent another hour waiting for our trainer. When he finally showed, looking irritated and distracted, he suggested we take the formal class that was scheduled in 5 minutes. Unless, that is, we already knew how to climb, in which case he could just go through the motions and let us loose.Â
I explained, in iambic pentameter, how I definitely needed the full training, because even though I climbed in the past, for probably 30 minutes, about a decade ago, certainly whatever I knew, I don't any longer know, and etc. To which he responded, looking off in the distance, "good, let's get this over with."Â The most time consuming part of our training was signing the form that said we were trained.Â
But necessity is the mother of invention, and after sending Mike hurdling through space a couple of times (he was a very good chap about it), I got the hang of belaying, abseiling, and tying knots like a sailor. I have yet to prove my mettle as a climber, but I’m in touch with my inner spider woman, and she says not to worry, we're going to do fine.
