while qrow can activate his semblance on his own, he can't turn it off; it will do its thing whenever it feels like it, being both a boon and a curse in a fight. raven's bonds most likely aren't the type she can just decide on on the spot, it takes time to form a genuine bond with someone, which can also make their use in battle limiting (not to mention the portals aren't the most inconspicuous, making them most useful for surprise attacks than anything else).

like, they can be useful, but there's a limiting factor... which in a way makes them less reliant on their semblances during combat, highlighting their skill using their weapons. a certain lack of control, a downside, that they just need to roll with, that stops their semblances from being the Greatest Thing Ever™.

Qrow Branwen

Qrow is… well a complicated fellow. He was very loyal to Ozpin, which caused him and Raven to clash.

Side note: Raven and him can’t turn into birds in my AU. Ik ik, takes away a cool and iconic thing… I just see no major use or reason to it.

I kind of discussed Qrow’s big thing with Yang in the Raven post, so I’ll get into two big things in this one:

1) Qrow still trains RWBY in my AU, and him and Tai raised Yang and Ruby. But they disagreed on Ruby being able to train at Beacon.

2) Qrow is kidnapped by the White Fang at the fall of Beacon. Surprise! This is because Salem and the White Fang are working together secretly, and Salem is hoping that Qrow will either draw out Raven (who is the Spring Maiden) or Ozpin.

Qrow still accompanies the kids when they go to Atlas :)

Summer Rose

So, just like canon, Summer is dead. She was Ozpin’s apprentice (he… kiiiind of groomed her, NOT IN A SEXUAL WAY TO BE CLEAR).

She was a major optimist, and had a bit of a matyr complex… believing she needed to fix everything and save everyone. This belief only intensified after Ruby’s death. This eventually led to her death…

Fun fact: in my Yang, she has a white bandana. That’s a part of Summer’s cape :)

Raven Branwen

So… Raven… kind of sucks in my AU.

She loves and is purely dedicated to her tribe. But briefly, she got caught up in the whole Ozpin/ Salem mess, and Ozpin convinced Raven to become the Spring Maiden. After realizing what she was tricked into (aka having a constant target on her back), she retreated back to her tribe.

She eventually popped up again, and her and Tai had a brief relationship, in which Yang was born. She don’t live Tai tho… she just needed an heir, and she believed that Tai was the best fit. When Yang was born, Qrow kidnapped her so that she could have a normal childhood with her dad.

Raven has spent her life trying to track her daughter down… and she finally gets a lead due to the Vytal festival.

When Beacon falls, Raven finally gets her daughter back, taking Yang back to the bandit camp.

Taiyang Xiao-Long

In my rewrite, Tai actually replaces Qrow in V4-5 (and 6, as in my AU the Mistral arc extends to V6).

His allusion in my rewrite is also the Cowardly Lion. There’s no Leo Lionheart in my AU, and actually… Tai is the ex-Haven headmaster. He ran away from his position (because… coward…) after Sunmer’s death.

He’s a very protective and borderline helicopter parent.

Also, Yang’s weapons belonged to Tai first :)

Taiyang's Force Ghost: It is your destiny.

Qrow's Force Ghost: Just remember to draw the line at your sister.

Ruby: Wait. Dad, uncle Qrow? You're not dead!

Qrow: It's a polycule power. Observe.

Ravens Force Ghost, picking her nose: This better be good.

Tai: Pay the goddamn child support!

Raven: I'm sorry, the number you're trying to contact is not available.

Raven, still standing there and looking at Tai: beeeeeee... [inhales] eeeeeee...
