Gizoid Brainworm Mini #6
Ima be real, this entire post is me pushing an agenda. Ahem.
GEMERL IN TEAM ROSE! I know a lot of folks have bounced this idea around, but I'm here to give my two cents about it. Anyway here's a massive list of reasons Gemerl should be in Team Rose.
Starting us off with Amy. I REALLY like the few interactions Amy has with Gemerl in the IDW comics. Issues #22, #35, and #36 notably demonstrate that the two work really well in a team! Amy is a quick thinker, and Gemerl responds well to direct instructions. But beyond that, I think Amy's more unhinged moments would pair EXCEPTIONALLY well with both Gemerl's curious and calculated sides. I feel like his confusion regarding Amy's infatuation of Sonic would make for some very funny moments. Finally of course, Good Stuff. There's a moment in IDW #22 Where Amy calms and rationalizes Gemerl in a very caring way, as she tends to do. The thing about that moment is... it makes me think about Amy's relationship to Emerl in Sonic Battle. Say what you want about her character during that game (I know I did.) but she grew very attached to that bot, and Emerl calling Amy "mom" to the last moment... Man, just thinking about it gets me emotional. Point being, I think a little bit of that could be explored with Amy and Gemerl. Maybe Amy still sees a little bit of Emerl in Gemerl, and so she wants to protect him the way she couldn't with Emerl. Maybe seeing Gemerl makes her a little upset sometimes, and Gemerl doesn't know why. Maybe maybe a million things maybe, all I'm saying is the potential is insane and I need to write a billion fanfics about it.
Ahem... Moving along, Cream! What's there to be said that hasn't already. Their dynamic is wonderful the backstory is heart wrenching and they're basically tied as a joint pair... So why bring her up at all? Well, if you haven't noticed (you've definitely noticed) Cream hasn't really been popping up much in recent Sonic stuff, despite being a fan favourite. Well, some folks at Sega and Sonic team seem tentative to include her in adventures. To that I say, the solution was there literally before the problem. I'm talking about Gemerl of course! Gemerl acting as Cream's guardian resolves the (definitely manufactured) issues with Cream in adventures! Worried about schoolwork? Gemerl is there to help her with homework! Babygirl shouldn't be fighting? Well, she already had Cheese for that, but now she also has a supa fighting robot too! Is mom worried? With Gemerl there, she's just a quick call away. If you want to play into Cream being literally the only character who needs to deal stuff like school, you can have your cake and eat it too with Gemerl there.
Finally, Big. Oh my god Big. I know some folks think that wanting Gemerl in Team Rose means wanting Big out for some reason, but I am here to tell you that couldn't be further from the case. I want Big and Gemerl to interact SO badly, it's insane. I can't put my finger on it, something about Big's demure and carefree attitude maybe? Big being... well not the sharpest crayon in the pool, it makes way for a GREAT juxtaposition with Gemerl's logic. Big misunderstanding, or straight up NOT understanding something Gemerl said that's a little too smart? Big randomly perfectly understanding something Gemerl said that's a LOT too smart for all the wrong reasons? Gemerl getting so very... very baffled at Big's obliviousness? If you're going to give Gemerl the robot voice, play INTO IT! This shit is comedy gold. But... there's more than just comedy. Big isn't just oblivious. He's simple. I think Gemerl could find in Big what he'd struggle to in just about any other character in the franchise. I like to imagine that if Gemerl struggled to understand feelings, being someone else's or his own he'd seek out answers. Amy might use some metaphor to try and paint a picture, Cream might try and bridge the gap between what Gemerl understands and what she knows... but Big would say it as it is. All three of these are extremely valid. Painting a picture, bridging a gap, both are needed for understanding. But a simple answer might help you realise that you already understood.
