Harry looked around in interest, taking in the still unfamiliar mixture of modern and magic. Ever since he arrived in America - New York City, to be exact - he was constantly surprised by the sheer newness of things. There were plenty of older buildings boasting the historic, rundown industrial aesthetic from its inception but sparkling skyscrapers made of reflective glass and high-tech offices dominated the skyline. And of course, being one of the most populous cities in the country, there were telltale signs of wizardkind if one knew where to look.
The gleaming chrome facade of his destination was identified only by giant numbers reading 2022 and a clean cut logo of a circle with a twinkling star inside. He drew his bag closer to his body as he awkwardly stepped between the neverending tide of busy people, who were clad in smart suits that probably cost more than his entire wardrobe combined. The interior of the bank was dominated by shiny, silver metal walls with recurring star motifs and accents of purple velvet on chairs and curtains giving the space a luxurious warmth. One wall was a giant LCD screen with a jumble of numbers and letters, all indistinguishable and meaningless to Harry, ticking across in regular intervals. He looked as out of place as he felt, but determinedly made a beeline for an open teller station marked “By Appointment Only.” As he stepped into the little booth, a woman typing away at a computer looked up and flashed him a brilliant smile.
“Erm, hi,” Harry said dumbly.
“Welcome, Mr. Potter,” she said. “We’ve been expecting you. Right this way.”
She walked out from behind her desk and motioned for Harry to follow him through a side door, leading down a well lit hallway. They approached a glass lift where she pulled out her wand and waved it in an intricate pattern, gesturing him to enter when the doors slid open.
“Our associate’s office will be the third door on your left, Suite 3254. Thank you for choosing Fortune’s Tellers where when it comes to money, don’t leave it up to chance - Fortune’s got you covered!”
She waved him off and turned on her heels, clacking away with efficient steps as Harry was rocketed into the sky. He gripped the handrail tightly as the lift flew by floors at a breakneck speed, watching the city fall away through the crystal clear glass. The further up he went, the quieter things became until he was left in a peaceful silence only accompanied by the soft, murmuring melody of background music.
When Harry had left England on what Hermione referred to as his international “soul searching trip,” she set up appointments for him to settle in more easily; one being with an American wizarding bank to be able to manage his finances while abroad. (While Gringotts has many overseas branches, the three were issued lifetime bans following the war.) The bank assured them that he would be personally seen to by one of their best employees, known for discretion with high profile clients and exceptional financial sense.
So far New York was a far cry from being back home - he’d been threatened by a mugger (thank goodness for magic), nearly run over and yelled at by countless aggressive taxi drivers, hit on by Americans charmed by his accent, and treated just like any other bloke in a sea of faceless people. All in all, he was enjoying himself quite a bit. Of course he missed home and everyone he left behind, getting stung by loneliness now and then, but it was freeing to be so untethered for once. He was snapped back to the present when the lift dinged once more, signalling his arrival on the 32nd floor.
Harry stepped out onto plush, purple carpeting and counted the doors as he walked down the corridor until he stopped in front of Suite 3254. The metal plate read Sr. Finance Officer - D. Black. Wiping his palms on his jeans, Harry knocked twice and waited.
“Come in.”
A slightly muffled voice beckoned him inside and he turned the handle, pushing slowly. The office was brightly lit through sunlight streaming in from the floor to ceiling glass wall behind a stately looking desk where a tall man sat, focused on his computer screen. Harry walked forward to sit in the chair on the other side of the desk when the man stood and their gazes met. A shade of grey Harry hadn’t seen in years (but could pick out from a lineup with ease) looked back in surprise as both parties froze momentarily.
“Malfoy?”
“It’s Black actually,” Draco said in a rich, deep voice, smoothing down his suit. “Long time no see, Potter.”
“Yeah, no kidding,” he gulped. “You...y-you look good.”
And wasn’t that the truth! Harry couldn't help but stare at the perfectly raised blonde eyebrow and confident smirk. Draco was dressed in a fitted suit that complemented his fair colouring and had filled out since their school days, looking relaxed and self-assured in a non-prattish way.
“Ahem, thank you,” he coughed politely. Draco adjusted the thin, gold-rimmed reading glasses perched upon his elegant nose. “Please, have a seat.”
“Oh right.”
“So according to your file you need an overseas line connected to your primary vault, and we can set up a local one for you here too - not to worry, ours are the safest you’ll find this side of the Atlantic. We even have specific countermeasures against three very enterprising young Gryffindors.”
Draco winked and Harry felt his face flush, wishing the ground would open up and swallow him whole. He felt at ease as Draco walked him through the paperwork and process to set up his account, completely caught off guard at how comfortable the entire exchange was. Harry was glad he didn't have to deal with the Goblins. Draco was so much better, he thought as he stared at the blonde who was going over some terms and conditions that Harry should have been listening to.
“Potter!”
“I’m sorry, what?” Harry started.
“I asked if you’d like a cup of tea. I know how hard it is to find a decent cuppa here.”
“That would be lovely,” Harry smiled.
Draco prepared them some tea as Harry watched the delicate and sure movements of his hands.
“So Black, huh?”
“Mhm, new beginnings and all that,” Draco mused, handing Harry his tea. He looked ethereal as the sunlight glinted off his face, his golden hair falling slightly into his eyes.
“This is perfect! How did you know how I take my tea?” Harry sipped his tea in contentment.
“When you go to boarding school with each other for seven years, you pick up a thing or two,” Draco replied with a smirk.
Was he flirting? Harry breathed in deeply through his nose to calm his racing heart and asked, “So what have you been up to all this time? I last heard you went abroad right after the war.”
And just like that, they fell into an easy conversation, completely losing track of time until Draco’s phone buzzed.
“Mr. Black, your last appointment for the day is here,” the voice announced.
“Oh, thank you. Send them up in five, please.”
Harry began to stand, stretching his legs.
“I’m so sorry, I didn't realise how long I’ve been here. It was great catching up. Perhaps we could do this again,” Harry said hopefully. “I mean, maybe we could grab a drink or something?”
“I’d love that,” Draco replied with a shy smile. He reached across his desk, a sleek business card extended between two fingers. “Here’s my card. Don’t wait too long to call me - as they say, fortune favours the bold.”
