Watching Ballad of Songbirds after reading the book is wild because they basically edited the main 3 characters so much to make them more acceptable/bearable to watch for a big audience and toned down their bad qualities.
•Snow is a lot less unhinged, more expressive of his inner thoughts and more humanized than in the book. Not just NOT hearing his thoughts in the movie. His actions are different , a lot of his bad or psycho moments are toned down or the context is changed to make him look more sympathetic.
•Lucy Gray’s manipulative, calculating, self-preservation, fierce behavior is also toned down. In the book she is a lot more cunning, at times also unhinged, homegirl literally BITES Billy Taupe and sings “you can kiss my ass” with a happy smile to the audience because she was being cunning and knows how to manipulate people to like her by being fake positive , instead of yelling “you can kiss my ass” in a rude way as in the movie.
•Sejanus is made less naive , less oblivious , less emotional and more fierce. Book Sejanus doesn’t give snarky comebacks to his classmates, doesn’t call out Coryo’s behavior and isn’t even aware what type of person Snow actually is. Movie Sejanus literally says snarky stuff to his classmates snd even to Snow when that’s the opposite of what his book character would do because book Sejanus is more insecure and oblivious .
Basically they Hollywood-ified all the 3 main characters and toned down their bad/controversial qualities and upped the traditional qualities that are liked in male/female characters like them. Or it felt like that to me
