i love taylor swift for more reasons that just loving taylor swift. i love taylor swift because i have specific memories and times and associations linked with her. when i think of folklore, i think of long summer days when i was figuring out who i was. when i think of evermore, i think of the the cold icy christmassy autumny season and my best friends living room. when i think of reputation, i think of the walking to school in the morning and dancing in my bedroom late at night. when i think of lover, i think of long lockdown days when lockdown was nothing but a repetitive action, picking flowers and feeling tired, of delivering letters to friends i couldn’t speak to. when i think of speak now, i think of car rides and quiet evenings, sitting on my carpet in the half night on the eve of my eighteenth. when i think of the debut and fearless, i think of early summer and sitting in children’s playgrounds and grainy videos and a fresh excitement for taylor swift. when i think of 1989 i think of the old greyer colder days of my last high school experience, but every era and song and time i associate differently and the ones i like more are the ones i associate to a different time and i am tied up and linked and swarmed with memories. i think having favourite artists means more than just likening their music- it’s about their music bringing back and forth between different times and feelings, having specific songs that you cling to in specific times. i listen to the 1 on long train journeys, i listen to the last great american dynasty on the first days of school. she is more to me than just music.
