If I ever got a tattoo it would be something closely inspired by this scene.
Undertale was a game that was kinda whatever to me. I think the story it had to tell (especially the way mechanics interacted with the 4th wall) was brilliant and I completely get why everyone was collectively obsessed with it, but I didnโt fall in love with the characters the way others did. I didnโt have scenes that stuck with me for days, I did the 3 basic playthrough (kill Toriel, realize youโre an ass and start over an hour in for true pacifist, genocide cause I heard about the Sans fight) and felt more than satisfied and moved on with my life. Itโs big enough on the internet that I kept coming across it but I never really gave it another thought.
Besides this scene. This is, for me, the most powerful and emotional thing a videogame has ever told me. Despite it all, despite the entire world out to get you, despite tough choices, despite struggle, and good, and bad, youโre still you. Youโre. Still. You.
My favorite song from a Disney movie is John Rzeznikโs โIโm Still Hereโ from Treasure Planet. May sound like an odd choice given itโs not a musical, but itโs an intense song and came to me at a point where I was a young adult trying to find myself. Give it a listen if you havenโt, itโs a song that still makes me emotional enough I usually skip it if it comes up on shuffle. Under the context of the movie, probably nothing to do with this if Iโm being honest. But for me (who just heard it and didnโt see the movie) it had a strong and powerful message of not needing others approval or even acknowledgement to be the best version of you. This somehow took that entire emotional rollercoaster of a song and condensed it into a single sentence. More than that, they go hand in hand.
Iโm still here. Despite everything, Iโm still me.
