So Echo is very much My Dog, and he's decided that there are a hierarchy of Rules dictated not just by who says what, but also where I am located.
He will not enter the cat room even when invited by/offered bribes by my housemate, who holds the gate open for him so he can have a supervised sniff of Tater while she is on a surface high enough to enjoy interacting with him.
If I enter the cat room without him and forget to tell him to wait for me, he will casually hop the gate within 10 seconds because as My Dog, he should obviously be helping me with every task I undertake, from changing out the headlight bulbs in the car to taking a bath, to petting the cat. Tater has mixed feelings about this, but he backs off when she grumbles at him, and waves his tail when she sniffs him, so progress continues.
Tater is a very bold little potato who keeps breaking containment to interact with Echo (and then getting mad if he's Too Tall), and Echo remains So Excited to interact with this new cat we clearly brought home specifically to be his new best friend. He pines when she goes and flops on a surface where he can't monitor her.
He's being really good for a big (relative to the cat, he's pretty petite for a GSD) goofy guy who usually does everything at 90mph. He's learned not to do the stompy-paw play bow to her, and he stops in his tracks if she grumbles about him looming.
This is all making me feel hideously guilty about life continuing to go on after losing Ripley, but it's not Tater's fault, and it's good to see both Echo and Logan so happy.
