There is so much chatter about searching for “hidden meaning” and symbolism in Moby Dick but I have been finding that Melville more often than not will very plainly explain his symbolism (sometimes immediately after doing the symbolism) in plain terms. Tashtego gets stuck in the decapitated and now sinking whale head so Queequeg dives in to pull Tashtego headfirst from the leviathan’s skull?
Did that passage sound like birth by cesarian? Melville immediately says yeah, we’re talking about obstetrics ya’ll! Everyone man should learn how birthing works. He’s putting a lot of symbolism in this beast but he’s not hiding it.
