T A N Z I M A U G U S TĀ āBlank Placard Danceā
For Anna Halprinās 1967 āBlank Placard Danceā, 20 dancers moved through the streets of San Francisco carrying empty white placards, which the imaginations of the passers-by could fill as they wished. With her choreographed demonstration, the American dance pioneer was reacting to the Vietnam War and to the social unrest in her own country. Now, in the midst of equally tumultuous times, the French choreographer Anne Collod takes a reenactment of Halprinās demonstration onto the streets of Berlin. What could or should they be protesting against? And what should they be protesting for? Infos: http://bit.ly/2rdNBuB

We shape our urban surroundings collectively, often without even noticing it; this is how we create the daily groove of a city. For three years now, in his performance series groove space, Sebastian Matthias and his team of dancers have been investigating the essential features of this specific rhythm: the tactile collective movement of a city. The last performance in the series, x / groove space, which was premiered in June at the tanzhaus nrw, is concerned with cultural crossovers and the points of contact between the urban dynamics of inhabitants of Düsseldorf and Tokyo.
Sebastian Matthias was kind enough to release an interview shortly after his performance, which took place on the 15th of August 2016, in the course of the 28th edition of Festival Tanz im August in Berlin.
HELMUT FRAGT: VIRVE
HELMUT: Please tell us a few words about who you are and what you do.
VIRVE: I am the artistic director of Tanz im August. All around cultural worker originally from Helsinki Finland. I have lived and worked internationally for last 20 years, managing The Dansens Hus in Stockholm for the last 6 years, and before that, nearly ten years went by founding and running Kiasma Theatre at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki.Ā
HELMUT: What is your personal fascination about dance, and what got you into it?
VIRVE: I have lived dance and danced as long as I can remember, so it is a big part of my life, professional and private. I went to a ballet school when I was 6 years old, and I am still on that track. I should maybe say that dance has also lived me.Ā
HELMUT: For quite a few people in Germany, modern dance is still associated primarily with āTanztheaterā and āAusdruckstanzā. What kind of references would you give to describe what contemporary performing art form is all about?
