Could plants be the answer to the looming threat of microplastic pollution? Scientists at UBC's BioProducts Institute found that if you add tannins—natural plant compounds that make your mouth pucker if you bite into an unripe fruit—to a layer of wood dust, you can create a filter that traps virtually all microplastic particles present in water. While the experiment remains a lab set-up at this stage, the team is convinced that the solution can be scaled up easily and inexpensively once they find the right industry partner.

This is a Tannin, it's an alien from the planet Lotan, and it's a quadrupedal hexapod. All tannins more or less are born with the same sets of reproductive organs, but gender themselves into several categories with age and experience, usually based on the circumstances of their own birth and whether or not they, themselves have had offspring.
They do not breathe through their mouths, instead breathing and even speaking through a peculiar gill-like labyrinth of tissues on either side of their body. This means that it is nigh impossible to choke one.
The species primarily lives in complex underground networks of caves and constructed rooms with a group of other Tannins. They are at least as intelligent as human beings, forming strong bonds with their clanmates. Their tails are prehensile, making them very dextrous despite their large size (similar to a large horse!)
Been a hot minute since we did a Fergus update-
So I ran out of IAL and ordered some of the same exact ones I had.
I did not get what I was expecting.
This is one single leaf of what arrived:
And now I get great views like this:
It's little fish against big leaf over here
And Fergus is enjoying every single damn moment of it

I love black tea it's my comfort everyday beverage, but people keep telling me it causes anemia and it prevents body from absorbing calcium. I think the anemia part is true but what about Calcium?
Foods have things called anti nutrients which bind themselves with certain minerals and prevent them from being absorbed in the body. In the case of tea, these anti nutrients are tannins but honestly it's not in a big amount or don't bind enough iron that will cause anemia. I don't remember the exact amount but basically the effect/amount or iron they bind is very neglible. Tannins also bind calcium. Phytic acid (phytates) are another group of antinutrients.
(Grains, beans, lentils, kidney beans etc also have these anti nutrients (phytates) and that's why we soak them and drain out that water before cooking. So do leafy vegetables (oxalates and phytates.) So the key is to find ways to cook food which removes/reduces the effect of antinutrients (but like they also have some health benefits so they aren't entirely bad. Tannins are antioxidants).

Plant of the Day
Wednesday 28 September 2022
For about six months of the year the wildflower Potentilla erecta (tormentil) can be found flowering. This creeping perennial has thin wiry stems and the flowers appear through wild grasslands. Historically the roots of the plant were harvested for the leather Industry due to the high levels of tannins.
