The 5 year anniversary of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is happening tomorrow, so along with me posting more smaller R&C related post over the next few days, I am going to post some that go over certain characters in the franchise that fans should really know, especially so they can appear in later R&C games like the highly anticipated Lombax Dimension game.
First is Talwyn Apogee.
She is a Markazian who was introduced in Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction for the PlayStation 3. She is an adventurer who cares about helping people and eventually she becomes a captain in the Polaris Defense Force, but the biggest fact about her is that she is Ratchet’s canon girlfriend and still is to this day.
Ratchet and Clank met her and her two warbot guardians Cronk and Zephyr (who parodied the PS3 and Xbox 360) when they broke into her space station, where she was able to hold them at gunpoint. The idea of Ratchet’s at the time future girlfriend doing this to him is hilarious and it’s a shame it isn’t talked about much. When she realized Ratchet is a Lombax, who the entire Polaris galaxy thought was extinct, she heard him out and after realizing they are trying to stop Emperor Percival Tachyon (more on him later) she and her warbots decided to help the duo out.
She became very helpful throughout the games she appeared in (sadly the PS3 era was a busy and crazy time for Insomniac Game) as she helped Ratchet and Clank find the Dimensionator and stopping Percival Tachyon AND was a key player in helping Ratchet find a lead on where Clank went about he was abducted. This eventually caused Ratchet and her to get close to the point that in the 2010 comic series when Ratchet decided to head home, she was so devastated that Ratchet heard her crying as he left her place. Luckily Ratchet returned to Polaris and in 2012, the 10 year anniversary year of Ratchet & Clank, Insomniac Games confirmed they were a couple at that years PAX convention. You can clearly see this in Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus as in that game Talwyn claim Ratchet and Clank are her only family left after Cronk and Zephyr died (but there is more on that) AND Ratchet basically implied Talwyn is one of the many reasons for why he rather stay in his home universe then try to find the Lombaxes if he had a chance.
One thing people should know about Talwyn is her father, Max Apogee. Max Apogee is a famed explorer in Polaris history who among his other discoveries found a Lombax artifact during the reign of Percival Tachyon, and used it to find the Dimensionator. While he tried keeping the artifact safe the robot space pirates stole it and while Max went after them he never returned, leaving Talwyn alone for years. In Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time it is revealed that his ship was found and it originated from Jasindu, the planet he relocated the Dimensinator. Not only that but we got some new info about how he was last seen helping Angela Cross (another “Lombax” I’ll get to later) and its theorized he used the Dimensionator to get her and himself to the Lombax Dimension. The comic implied the others believe this theory too as Talwyn stated she is proud her father was able to help another Lombax.
Some other fun facts about her is that she can read the Lombax language and her family seems to run some kind of company that makes useful survival products like jetpack, armor Ratchet has worn, and unique communication devices. She also as a sad history of getting taken hostage, which I recall some people finding annoying.
While sadly not having a big role in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, the fact Talwyn is mentioned by Ratchet on Savalii AND she is seen in the end credits shows that Insomniac Games hasn’t forgotten about her SO she should appear in the next Ratchet & Clank game. All the stuff I just said is reason enough as along with her knowledge of Lombaxes, it would be great to see her finally reunite with her father as that could lead to both touching moments and some drama as I once talked about here. Also her VA Ali Hillis has had a role in the 2016 game and Rift Apart so I bet she would happily return to voice Talwyn again.
It would also be interesting seeing her interact with Rivet, as if Rivet is Ratchet’s counterpart and/or a lesbian would she develop a crush on Talwyn :3
Also the writers could give her a “damsel NOT in distress” moment. That would be funny for long time fans.
I don’t think future bio post will be this long, but I hoped you like this regardless. What are your thoughts on Talwyn Apogee?
